Anyone good at building rover V8 engines and would be happy to teach an ape like me how to do it?!? I've got two of the curse word things now!!! Happy to pay with beverages and biscuits!!! If you fancy having a play yourself, I've got a pdf copy of the Land Rover 4.0 and 4.6 overhaul manual I can e-mail over. Should pretty much cover everything. They are a fairly simple engine, just with eight of everything! Yeah I'm keen to learn as it looks like I might have to do a few of them with my luck!!! Lol. Will it cover the 3.5 and 3.9 as I have one of each?!? Cheers!!!

Awwww that sucks. Keep at it! Soon you'll be able to rebuild these with your eyes closed

PM me your e-mail. . The 3.5, 3.9, 4.0 and 4.6 are all close relatives. At least this would get you started, then I'm sure the .5 and .9 crowd could chip in.

Sorry to read about your engine problems - they are easy to strip down and if you post some pics I'm sure some people on here will be able to identify possible causes/cures.

Right update time!
Start with embarrassing good news! The blown engine probably isn't blown, just a split in the oil pressure pipe which was firing oil everywhere at 40psi!!! (how stupid do I feel!!!!)
So that should be a quick and easy fix! Bad news is, it's now refusing to start. Getting fuel and good spark but it's having none of it!!! Which is VERY frustrating as it was running fine before the oil spraying!!!
I'm getting it trailered home FINALLY this friday so I will be able to spend a lot more time on it from then but it's now a puzzler as to what is wrong!!!

If you have fuel and spark, all you need is air - did your air filter(s) get covered in oil?

While I've been trying to get it running I've been leaving the airfilter off so don't think it's that but thanks for the advice!! Spark is good and all the plugs were soaked so defo getting fuel!! I've not messed with timing other tha tweaking the dizzy but only by 5-10 degrees and I've reset that now too.
Georgeb off here kindly sent me the manual for the Rover V8 engine so I think I need to do some reading! Just frustrating that it was running and now isn't after what turns out to be a basic oil leak!!! (Still embarrassed about that!!!)
Going to have another look at it tonight and prep it for transport on Friday!!!

Did you remove anything to get to the cause of the oil leak? Could you have put some wires back in the wrong way round?
I had a non starting issue with the MG which turned out to be that I'd put a wire from the distributor to the wrong place after changing some parts over

Not that I'm aware of but that's a good shout! I'll go over all the wiring tonight and see if there is anything a miss there. There was oil sprayed everywhere so might need to strip and clean a lot of connections too!!!
Didn't think it could be wiring with it getting good spark but I'm not taking anything for granted with this car. LOL!

Could be plug wires in the wrong order. You would get spark, just in the wrong place.

Again I'll triple check tonight but I've got them all marked up so should be correct, but then I am as bright as a 1w bulb so I might have put them back on wrong!!!

Right, the engine is back alive and isn't spewing oil everywhere!! Still not running great but it is running.
I checked all the connections were good and clean, checked the leads were in the right order and made sure the cap and dizzy were good.
Still no good. Checked for fuel and bingo, no fuel now. The fuel pump setup was only a temp job to get it running and it would appear it had a bad air leak!!
Sorted now but I think the MAF is shot!!! Won't run with it connected so gonna try a new one and see how it goes!!!

Right folks. Long overdue update on this. Spent more time on the garage that on the car as I've been trying to get organised with work benches and stuff, but finally got round to the car.
Got a friend round this evening with laptop and software and have found out the cause of the problem!! Throttle potentiometer is goosed!! Great, as they are not available. There's one on eBay which I'm hoping I can get, but if anyone on here knows of a good working one for sale please let me know!!
Fingers crossed it will be up and running with one of those fitted.

Massive progress if you get it running right though Now I do have a spare potentiometer, that I was keeping as a spare as I was aware how hard they are to get at a reasonable price. If you get really stuck (if the eBay one is a no go) let me know.

Luckily I've found a guy on eBay who has stock of some brand new original pot sensors! Should arrive on Tuesday, so fingers crossed the motor will be purring by mid week!!
Gav let me know if you want the guys details as he says he's got a few. Cost me £40 inc special delivery postage!

Still not running! Got the new por Aesir on and it fires up and runs quite hi revs then slows and cuts out. I've bought the diagnostic stuff off eBay but that's not showing any errors!
Beginning to fear this engine may be a dud!!! Not good!!

This sounds very similar to the running issues on my Subaru engine, now fitted to my VW T3. Having played around for ages I went through all of the wiring and found that the engine earth was loose. Tightened it up and boom, engine ran sweet as a nut! I was very surprised but may be worth a bash?
