Ok....
Good engine to swap into my consul?
would love to go auto but not strictly a must.
Anyone know what would go well (and how much a garage would chrage for a swap? - roughly?)
atm...cheap=good for me (and SWMBO)

The reliable old pinto? cost peanuts for a boggo non-cosworth block. Or if your good with your hands find a late plate granada and take it to bits. Cosworth-consul FTW ;D

no engine swaps going to be cheap from a garage. how about a zephyr six pot? not going to set the world on fire, but a torquey cruiser from what i here. going to be a nuts and bolts swap too, much cheaper labour. other than that, an essex with an auto box on the back from a 3 litre capri or granada won't be too hard to cobble in. or as Rmad says, bmw six would be the win. 4 speed overdrive auto and picked up for buttons and farthings too. it would be "the win"! theres a consul mk2 with a 318i engine and auto fitted around somewhere.

My mate had a quote (a couple of years back) to fit a Pinto in he's Mk2 from Burnham Autos and its was a very reasonable £1000. A couple of mates have done this swap and managed to keep the column change too. The Zephyr 6 pot is too long for the bay.

never knew a zephyr 6 was too long, apologies for the suggestion. but if you are bulkhead chopping, fit the bm six. might as well have some go if its a bit of work to install a six-shooter.

not the dreaded omega ! you'll upset BC v6 vauxhall = pants. however, senator 24v straight 6 transplant would work nice. even the 3.0 12v would have serious grunt. nice thinking mitch

Essex V6 is traditional, see a lot of Pinto ones too. Rv8 has been done, I'd go 302 myself.

Whilst the 302 is a 'great' choice, consider that this'll be much harder to actually do successfully, and cost a lot more - back axle, braking, suspension, sometimes even steering could (and should, with ~200BHP+) need to be uprated. There's a lot more exhaust to fabricate as well when using a V engine and no doubt some stuff'll need relocating, all adds to the cost.
Just my 0.2c, depends what you want from the car really. Autobox is a good bet though, take some stress off the drivetrain.

if you do want a 302 in it i know a guy who has the whole conversion in a consul in his workshop sitting there doing nothing, last time i spoke to him he wanted to get rid, tried to sell it to my friend who had the mk2 roof chop kustom konsul that sold a few months back. sure he'd carry out the conversion for you and wont be much as he does the work after work and on weekends. He fabbed up my headers and roll bar for a fraction of what others were quoting, sound bloke and got it done quicker than he quoted by far. PM / email me if you're interested and i'll pass his email on. His workshop is about 2 miles from the pod so you can go test it afterwards. :-) He will do any other fab work required aswell. Few other guys share the workshop with him and building rods so they muck in aswell.

302 is a no-lose conversion IMO.
stock Consul makes like 20 MPG average. 302 Consul will make about the same.
Fitting some bizzare choice like a Volvo lump or 2.4 Scorpio motor will require as much fabrication and special prop etc as well as baffled fuel tank, return lines, swirl pot, etc. which a carbed 302 won't. any autobox conversion will need a new rad to include the trans cooler (or an add on) so theres not much extra cost there.
Stock Consul brakes are just about OK for a 1703cc slug, but any kind of more modern engine, even a Pinto you'll need more brakes. Especially with an auto.
Specialist insurwers don't seem to care what ebgine is in the car. I know a guy who had a mK3 Cortina and his insurance went down when he swapped the Pinto out for a rover V8 in it...
Resale value of a Pinto / auto Consul = £2000ish. With a 2.4 Scorpio lump or the other odd engines mentioned £1200-£1500 I guess. With a 302 in it £4000 or so.
There won't be £2K difference in the conversion cost.
And the 302 will be a far better car to drive.
