Now... Havin bought my Consul in january at the cost of a grand and spending roughly another grand on bits and bobs tarting it up i just had a lovely bill from my speedshop for 535quid (gulp!) Seems as well as my clutch plate going, the leaves at the back were shot as were my plugs and ponts etc etc etc....more than i expected. Having it 5 foot in the air they said uncovered a wealth of problems that would be needing attention very soon (no surprise there considering its 46 damn years old!) Being slightly overbudgeted with everything else in life it has come to light that i need an injection of cash or the buggers gonna be off the road for a LONG time On the up side my reg plate has been valued at over 1300quid. Should i be tempted to sell the little number and plumb the money into making my ride rockin' an' rollin'?? (also as a side question....anyone know roughly how much garages charge for a full engine swap? rover V8/escort 2ltr engine?)

sell plate, fix car.
If you go for engine conversion (professional job NOT cheap) then go for the v8, you will only end up doing it later if you stick a 4 pot in it.

trouble with a V8 tho is that I'm just gonna have to worry about switchin to discs rather than die trying to stop on drums!!

I'm saying nowt, I dunno, nice to have that history and a nice short number, but what would replace it? how would you get another number?
Oh and a pro install wont be cheap that sif you find someone good,,,who also wants to do it.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

oh yeh...doh! I'm not fully clued up on what you can and cant put on...would it have to start with an X? No. Chances are they'll issue you with an age related plate but it will be non transferable. Or possibly issue an 'A' plate.

I think the DVLA will offer you an age related plate...I think they've stopped the old A plate jobbies and have moved on to non-transferable non-age specific ones, usually Scottish (The 'S' in the middle being the giveaway - I've got BSL 229 as a non-transferable on my Moggy).
I'd expect a simple (but non-original) engine swap to cost about £1000-£1500, space restrictions or complicated electrics will be a major factor on price. I'd trust Burnham Autos to give you an honest quote...beware of people who will do it on the cheap if you haven't seen their work, a good job is worth paying for.
