this is a long winded investigation for now, but as I'm trying to secure another old yank pickup I want to add a dirty diesel, mostly to curb the suffocating fuel costs.
quick search on youtube with diesel exhaust sounds I found this
I guess my first question is are these kind of systems available to meer mortals cost wise? and to achieve a sound other than a noisy old diesel would I need a more modern turbo'd engine as well??
I know chucking in a V8 would solve the above issues but it wouldn't help my weekly wallet so........
help/suggestions would be great
thanks

I agree it would never sound the same but that vid up there did surprise me at how sweet a diesel could sound (but as i say is it as much about the new turbo'd engine as the exhaust too ??)

yeah I'm lucky enough where i am theres quite a few lpg stations, I'm only running a t5 v70, but without it, i couldnt afford to.
and i think you can make a diesel sound quite cool, itd have to be a turbo, but that doesnt mean modern!

I've only watched the first few minutes so far, note most of them are 5 or more cylinders Here's some of my offerings Removing the silencers after the turbo is generally the way on diesels, and just as importantly the more cylinders the better

I filmed my car earlier today for it's first drive since last year. Sounds awesome with new setup. My recipe for win diesel - supercharger, big turbo, branch manifold, little/no silencers. The branch manifold seems to give it a raspy throatier sound. Which was nice.

Those commer knocker engines are possibly my favorite engine ever!!
As for the original question, Watch some of the current motortrend diesel challenge vids on youtube. I like the sound of a (turbo) diesel with no silencer, You get some nice turbo whistle and a throaty growl. Its Nothing like a petrol but its cool in its own way.
To get any decent noise you need a big detroit diesel or something, Even my old t4 with no silencers, exiting straight from the turbo into the enginebay was quiet enough to be driven!!

Mr Speedy, I raise you a Commer TS3 in a Mini I still think the sub-2ltr eco diesels sound rubbish in comparison to all the larger capacity diesels

Yeah, I agree. But then I think anything 'Eco' sounds as exciting as wet socks! By their nature you need a bit of capacity to get a diesel sounding nice, and as many cylinders as possible. All you can do with the small stuff, is just remove all silencers and install at most a 'cherry bomb'. Old school I know, but they do work

Truck breakers are full of old Leyland Roadrunner/Leyland DAF 45's. The rest of the truck basically falls apart around the fabled Cummins 6BT engine, which could probably withstand a nuclear war. 160bhp in this guise, up to 210bhp as fitted to bigger Leylands. And if they fit in a Landy, they'll fit in just about any Yank pickup. And they sound lovely.

I worked for an aftermarket exhaust company, every diesel I built an exhaust for hardly changed the note/sound at all, these were all with the cat, I played with my own van, it's a 1.9 jtd Doblo, With a straight through pipe it was epic! But way to loud! So I now have a double side exit system with just the cat and no silencer, I like the sound not to loud and how it looks, And the noise is a weird mix of diesel and turbo spooling up which is always good,

Turbo diesels with straight through exhaust systems sound great. Especially when you up the boost
