Hi folks, Would anyone know if Escort/Capri/Cortina rear leaf springs are all the same dimensions, and what size they are? One of the leaves on the Hunter estate rear spring has just snapped Not good news but is a good reason to fit something uprated & easily available Vital statistics (!) are 2" wide by 48" long. If I'm reading the factory manual right it should 2" positive camber unloaded and be level with a 327lb load ... does this sound about right ? It's a bit desperate so if anyone knows where I can buy or borrow a pair of rear springs around the North East can you let me know All help appreciated! many thanks

just out of random interest i measured a pair of escort mk5 van ones in my garden and they size up as 48.75 eye to eye center but 2 3/8 width of course they probably would be rather heavily rated
the unloaded -loaded sounds likley the car unladen, then flattened with 148kg in the car possibly

^ good thinking! sounds interesting Thanks for taking the time to check, I've had a look around Google and ... Escort Mk1 are same width 2" (50mm) as my Hunter Escort Mk2 (and I suspect all others form what you said) are 2 3/8 (60mm), the good news is many folk have ground the ends of 60mm springs down and used them on Mk1's with no problems Not sure what Cortina / Capri springs are but have been Capri 2.8 springs are a good upgrade for Escorts I need to get under mine when the monsoon ends and measure length properly to see if 48.75" Escort springs would fit. Heavy-duty would be good as the Hunter is a much-used estate so it sounds like Escort van springs (or any pair of 2" springs I can canabalise to replace the snapped leaf on mine) are looking favourite Anybody else got any good ideas Thanks

Rear leaf spring info for future reference (length measured with wheels on the ground) Hunter estate,50mm wide, 48.75" long Escort Mk1 50mm wide, 48.75" long < (Estate / Van = heavy duty) Escort Mk2 60mm wide, 48.75" long Escort Van/Estate Mk2 - Mk9 , 60mm wide, 48.75" long, heavy duty ;)60mm springs can be fitted to 50mm (Mk1) Escorts, either file/grind front of spring or remake front hanger on the car to take the wider springs. 50mm = 2" ,60mm = 2 3/8" All info believed correct, if you spot any errors can you post 'em up Thanks

good to read all the front wheel drive vans used the same leaf springs, i did wonder if they did. It looks all are same length, all are 60mm wide (apart from Escort Mk1) but I think the difference is in the carrying capacity. Good info & specs www.maunmotors.co.uk/fordsmallvanspec.html

Todays question Is it safe/sensible/possible to drill an extra hole in a leaf spring, or do they need to be drilled before they are heat-treated? The centre-bolt in Escort springs is mid-way between the ends of the spring (sensible) On Hunters, the bolt is a couple of inches forward of the center-point so if I fit Escort springs the axle will move backwards (not good) One option might be to redrill an Escort spring to fit the bolt in the "Hunter" position. Any thoughts? Bright ideas are always welcome!
