Hi all. Picked this up from an old boy who's had to give up driving, and said I'd see what I could get for it for him... but Rover's aren't my area of expertise.
1972 (tax exempt) P6 Rover V8 auto. Owned by the present owner since 1989. It's a bit rough round the edges and pretty grubby, but is actually tested and taxed til next May... so must be solid enough in the main structure - although it did have a fair few advisories of some rust and perished bushes etc. I'm told that although he's covered very few miles in the last few years (less than 100 I believe) most of those were covered going to the MoT station and back. The last few MoT's register the same mileage, but that's because the odometer seems to have stuck, though the speedo works.
Around the body is solid, but there are many patches of bubbling rust, though I presume these are only cosmetic, and a dent in the rear wing near the rear lamp. Inside the boot looks pretty crusty around the aperture too, and the front valance has rust as shown in the pics.
Inside isn't much better. The seats are grubby and worn and the carpet is frayed faded and in parts mouldy. The dash is cracked and warped in places too, but one small bonus is a nice period radio that works.
Tyres are almost brand new and on a very short test drive the engine sounded and ran very sweetly and the brakes seemed to work very well. Gearbox seemed to change perfectly. Could hear a bit of knocking from the nearside front corner though and the reason for the short test drive, however was that once up to temp a water leak manifested itself. Quite a bad drip which seems to be towards the back of the engine rather than the front.
The alternator charge light (IGN) also stayed on and there was no reading on the ammeter, so the alternator may not be working, though I will be checking the wiring to see if it's just that.
So, my question is? How much for such a car? I can see what basket cases go for (just a fe of hundred quid), and really nice ones are £3000+ but what about a really scruffy runner with T&T that could be back on the road very quickly?
Your suggestions please :-)
