There isnt a cheap conversion all k series were bolted to transverse gearboxes. Matt ...except for very late ('91 onwards, I think) FSO Polonez' - petrols were 1.4 K series, and diesels were 1.9 n/a Peugeot, all RWD...

I think all Polonez's were 1.5's... you'll have to look at the Caro (1994-5ish) and did they come to the UK with the K-Series? I know they did with the Pug lump but hmm...

Er,
Mitsubishi 4G61 \ 62? Or were these 8 valves? (the one that went in the early 90's Colt GTI)
Or if you've got a bit of vertical space, how about a Peugeot Mi 16 engine, the alloy 1905 cc version? They have a bit of a problem with oil surge, but that's easily remedied and very tuneable, available for peanuts now.
I believe one of the LDV \ Sherpa derivatives used an XUD and the bellhousing pattern is the same. Not sure what box was used in them though, and being a diesel the ratios will undoubtedly be out.
The Pell Genesis used an Audi 80 box to take the drive rearwards, might be worth investigating as well.
There is also the redtop coscast Vauxhall XE to consider as well.

i only thought of the k-series 1st as i've had good results before, the later engines don't blow gaskets likethe early ones, they had plastic locating dwels for the head that would melt so the head would mive a teeeeeennnnyyy weeeeny amount then gaskets would splurge out! the late ones have metal dowels & are ok, i've not used a k-series in a rwd setup though & i'm sure if i made a manifold it should run ok on big SU'S, maybe 2 1.75" jobbys should be ok for a 1.8 i'd have thought

I'd go for the 4 AGE over the K Series, for the following reasons:
1. Head Gaskets 2. Long Bolts 3. Plastic Dowels. 4. Stupid Ladder Brace at the bottom of the block.
Advantages of the K Series:
1. Good power to weight 2. Light 3. Fairly lairy cams as standard, fun over 4000 RPM.
I've only ever driven a 414 and a boggo MGF, so I can't really comment on what the rest of the K series range is like.
Get an AE86 box for the AGE and you're laughing. Huge range of LSDs \ back axle options as well I believe. Not cheap though, rampant scene tax. That's why I'd be inclined to go with the Mi 16.

There is a way to mate a 4efte fit a rwd box but involves cutting up two bell housings (T series and E series) and having them welded together! i have only seen it done once and that was a guy in the far east somewhere. Very good engine that will see 200hp pretty easy but allot of effort needed to get a rwd box to fit i'm afraid.

thats a pity on the 4efte engine if its an to mate it to a rwd box! no wonder i've seen them in the rwd starlets &toymota1000's would be cracking if there was a kit for these, bum biscuits! an alloy motor is the preferance for me, small as possible, lightweight is the name of the game! turbo & rwd, its atrackday project that'll be road legal but not used alot
