Hi guys, just got a letter from the DVLA fining me £80 for failing to renew the SORN on my Puch moped It states that I have failed to respond to any of their previous attempts to contact me. This is the first letter I have received! I was also under the impression that once a vehicle is declared SORN then there is no need to renew every year? I'm sure that came into effect in 2013? I'm really angry here and wouldn't mind some knowledgeable people to give me some ammo for the impending phone call!

www.gov.uk/sorn-statutory-off-road-notificationAs you say, it should be on SORN until the vehicle is taxed, sold or scrapped. Does it say what period they're fining you for? Maybe it had lapsed SORN pre-dating the change in rules? I would ignore the fine. The weak legalities and poor enforceability of DVLA fines have been discussed here before.

If you check your VRM against the DVLA database, when does it say the Date Of Liability is? The continuous SORN rule only came into effect from 16th December 2013, so if your previous SORN or VED expired before this date, you would have had to make a renewal statement for the SORN to still be in place.

It is not a legally binding fine, it is a request for payment the only thing the dVLA can fine you for is if the car is being used or kept on the road without being taxed as that is an offence. Ignore it they will send you a few crappy letters threatening court action, CCj's removal of goods etc. but it won't come to anything.

Cheers mate, I hope you are right! Me too! I've had and ignored loads of letters for them. If they were enforceable they'd have my house off me by now.
