hi peeps.
my plan is to take a set of Volvo steel wheel centres and plant them into a set of wider steel barrels from a different make, allowing me to choose my own width, offset etc.
question is what cars have wider than the norm steel wheels, preferably in 16" diameter. I`m really after 8"
anyone know? welded construction would be good aswell.

Apart from certain Volvo models (not sure which as they changed the center bore) the best wheels I have found are those on Peugeot/Citroen large saloons and Vans. I have some 7x16 wheels on my 940 although I have spacers. It might be worth looking to see if any more recent cars have wider steels fitted, possibly full size spares. The largest I could find a few years back were 7x17.
If you just want centers then they did a 6 1/2 x 16 that was fitted to lower spec 407 but the most common seem to be the van ones like mine. I think some Motor home companies take them off and fit alloys.
For outers American steels are fairly easy to get or you could try Wellers or even one of the companies who make wire wheels and get some outers before they punch the holes in them.

You may want to double check the centres are the same diameter just in case.

Yea not on Volvo wheels but I'm currently doing a little Ford 13" wheel project. I discovered that the wheel centres are not always the same size and vary by up to 5mm. I guess it depends on who made the wheels.

16x8" would be a very unusual size for an OEM steel rim, if such a thing exists. 16x7" is much more common. If you're willing to go much bigger, I know the Chevrolet Caprice Police Patrol Vehicle, made in Australia by Holden, has 18x8" steel rims, which look awesome (without the centre caps). There are a few more big American cars with similar sized spare wheels. As mentioned, if you're willing to spend a little bit of money, you can buy steel rims brand new and weld your own centres in.

16x8 do exist, i had a set, they were 6 or 8 stud, off a an american pickup. youll find em a lot easier aftermartet though, i think you can get land rover modulars in that size. as noted though, theres at least 3 different 'sizes' of centre though, so are not always interchangable.
