Something Ive never given a thought to before will any coil work on a 4 cylinder or 8 cylinder engine or do they need need specific coils for the amount off cylinders (lets just assume we have points not a fancy electronic ignition) for this question

Yep any coil. Just make sure you use one to suit whether you have a balast resistor or not, that is all.

what about charge time and duty cycle .... you are firing a coil twice as often on a V8

You need a decent coil, that's for sure. Bosch Blau coil is good on '8s, spark so fat it jumps a mile ;D
(Probably totally screwing my distributor cap at the same time, but hey, looked impressive ;D)
I'd use a decent Aldon or American racing one (i.e. Mallory) as these are proven in these kind of applications.

what made me think about is because i bought a coil off ebay supposedly for a v8 mustang brand new in the box, when it arrived written on the side off the coil was use on contactless ignition system only with external resistor.Well I have points in at the moment just so i can get it up and running,so in theory I cant use this coil does anyone know why it cant be used ? what will happen to it melt or something?

your points wont last long using the electronic coil
IIRC its to do with the current draw of a electronic coil being greater than a points one
