Heya knowledgeable retro people.......
I want to know about what boxes will fit onto my P6 3500 motor.
Auto preferred but anything considered. Can anyone tell me what bolts straight up and will work? anyone got anything suitable at budget prices?

An interesting option would be a GM TH 200-R4 automatic box. It's a 4speed box with 4th being an OD gear, so it should boost your fuel economy a little, or allow you to use a steeper gear. It likely comes with a lock-up torque convertor which would further boost your economy. Your best bet would be mid eighties North American RWD cars powered by a V6. I'd look at Firebirds, Camaros, Regals, Grand Prix's, Cutless Supremes, Malibus and Monte Carlos.
The Buick/GM Corporate V6 is a Buick V8 with two cylinders lopped off, so it should bolt up to your engine.
Talking of Buick V6s, I think a great conversion would be the Turbo'd V6 out of a Buick Grand National dropped into an old Rover.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Yea, I think you need a TVR bellhousing/adaptor to get a T5 on a Rover V8. The Borg Warner 65, as fitted standard to some models, is a good strong box. It is a 3 speed box, nice clean shifts and very reliable. The Borg Warner 35 will fit directly as well and is much the same. You should be able to pick one up 2nd hand for anything from 5-100 quid, a rebuilt one for about 250-500 (this is much the same as the cost of getting one rebuilt), something along those lines

AFAIK the Rover has a different bolt pattern to the Buick version. Real Steel sell a Chevy trans bell housing if you want to go for a yank box like a TH350 or T200R4 but they are quite a bit beefier than most of the euro boxes and therefor you risk parasitic losses.
You want manual or auto?
Manual theres the P6 3500S 4 speed but its weak. The Rover SD1 and Jag LT77 but they blow main shafts with hard use. Theres a Jag / TVR / Marcos / MG RV8 trans called the R380 IIRC. this is reckoned to be the "native" trans of choice. Then theres the adaptor options of Ford MT75 / T5 / etc and GM manual transes from the US.
Autos theres the BW35, BW65 and the GM 180 "Strasbourg" which were all stock fit to the Rover over the years. I have seen a few BMW 4 speed autos on Rover V8s but I don't know if they fit without any mods or what. I suspect this may involve iusing a bellhousing off a later Range Rover or something. Then as suggested yank GM trannies using the Real Steel adaptor.

Hi People,
I would prefer an auto but at the end of the day not too fussed. I'm not going to be building a rip snorter of a motor, just mildly nicer than stock with headers, exhaust and inlet being the only real changes i think. So it doesnt need to hold up to abuse or strip antics.
Again thanks for the info folks, i don't actually have a car to put the thing into yet but the motor is basically built and I'm sort of looking for a vehicle in a non committed way.

...I don't actually have a car to put the thing into yet but the motor is basically built and I'm sort of looking for a vehicle in a non committed way... Will it go in the 126? Or maybe bolt it in the middle of a spaceframe and slip one of the Dyane shells over it...
