I do like those lotus engines and I have a friend in nelson who bought one for his viva but unless I fit it for him he will probably never use it. However I know if I express interest in it he'll want to keep it.
Mx5 engine would be great too. They look neat with the proper twink cam covers.
Most of these options combined with cert costs add up beyond the current thickness of my very scottish wallet (I'm a davidson) so really trying to think inside the 'no cert needed' box
Oh I wish nz had the freedom to modify things, without pen pushers getting involved, like I got used to in the UK.
Still, to quote Mark and Lard, mustn't grumble. It could be worse. I could be living in Belgium etc where you can't modify your car to any real level then use as a daily.

Where does the power increase figure and capacity come from is it from that exact spec car or could you go to 20% of the most powerful engine available in that model with those brakes?

Mx5 lump is fat and lacks torque. Why not give that 2.0 V6 a new home?

My nephew has just bought a hi that he plans to use for night rallying. He's going to use the a 2.2 alloy lotus bottom end with a slant 2.3 single cam head. This is because you can't use 16v engines with carbs.

You do realise that the "racing" version of the 2.3 engine was eventually a twin cam 4 valve jobbie.... It was used in the Firenza and the Chevette. Some versions were 2.6 litre. This pic was from 1974 - the Escort broke...

My brother is lucky enough to own a genuine HS Chevette historic rally car so has learned the hard way how often 16v Ice Cream Van engines break and how expensive they are to repair.

Not familiar with the Datsun/Nissan 1200 (A-Engines ??) so just had a read up - sounds like a good little mill and more advanced than the Vauxhall unit. For simplicity with the NZ regs and just getting her back on the road, it sounds like a winner!

I am thinking minimum 2 litre in order to provide the sort of forward progress that might be in keeping with the amount of effort involved in making it happen...
It is just difficult to think of an historic powerplant that would provide the goods.
Unless it was an early Austin/Rover turbo...

theres a guy in brisbane on astra-mk2 club who has a bunch of 20XE/C20LET stuff from blighty. from memory his new power plant is a 2.4 ecotec crate engine shipped from U.S.A much cheapness, all alloy (124kg) 16 valve, vvti, 173bhp out of the box

Trying to keep the same or lower capacity what about a rwd starlet engine or a Telstar they had a little engine didn't they? Both should be easy to find still I guess?

Basically you cant increase the engine capacity beyond what the car was registered with or increase power beyond 20% extra without getting a certification. The cert process is not tricky but still a pain plus now costs about $500. So if i go down that route I might as well go full on and fit something much more...fun. Yeah Ken- those 2.3 Vauxhall twinks were great but fragile and needed care. Even the oil pump placement meant the race cars often need special beforehand pressurising before start up or fitment of an accusump system. Things that can be worked around but certainly not fit and forget engines like modern engines. Mark- As mush as I love the V6 Viva I'm keen on doing something other than the V6 just for change plus finding another gearbox adds to the costs. However boys and berries... for the next few months I will be doing two days of work a week at a local hotrod fabricator. Hes a good dude and is having a big cleanout. He just gave me this bodboy... Its a GM Northstar quadcam V8. Apart from problems stemming from poor headbolt thread strength, which can be fixed with various kits available, its a pretty cool American take on the J and Euro 32 valve eights. I can bolt up a Holden 5 speed manual box to it and it comes with the ECU and engine loom. Sweet. I am not at all thinking about possibly fitting this into the rustwagon. Not at all. Actually seriously, I will just get the Viva running first and play around with little engines for a bit but I do see this V8 sitting in the corner of the workshop with a little halo hovering above its heads calling out to me....

That might not be so crazy if it is at all workable. At the risk of offending all the Micra lovers here I am inclined to the belief that the best thing a Micra could do is donate its parts to something more worthy.

worst thing about northstars is the Magnesium cam cover on one side and the plastic on the other, makes the engine look odd

I wasn't sure as they are fed? If so I'm keen!!! I too like the idea of a sweet little twink. Would be great for weight distribution plus so economical. Any rwd boxes known to fit?

Don't know about mounting points I'll have a look at the weekend as my girlfriend has one, she drives it like she stole it for 14000 miles a year.
It would be nice if the bellhousing bolt pattern was the same as 1.8/2.0 as a 200sx box would fit but I've not heard of anyone doing it

Hannahs little sister just bought her second Micra. She had a K10? Now a K11 with the 1000cc engine. She loves it. Yes please do check it out. I did a quick search and it seems that there is no RWD box that fits up however a few have adapted various RWD Datsun boxes to suit via adaptor plates. Id be happy to do that if needed.
Id also like to know if the ECU is a standalone setup easily removed and run away from rest of the loom. I think it most likely will be.

The micra lump def has bosses on the passenger side, but I'm not sure about the drivers side. This might be fun though...
