I was wondering how many people use fuel additives in their leaded cars, or wether they just use unleaded and hope for the best.
my volvo has half 6 year old stale curse word and half standard 95 octane (about a gallon of each) and I was just thinking shall I just go for it and use normal petrol, the book does say 96 octane is needed too which would be super unleaded or is there something anyone recommends to bung in. I ant get lrp either btw, is that even still made.
if anyone has specific knowledge with regards the renault 1.4 in the 343's thatd be even better.

Should use super unleaded yes... may suffer from pinking otherwise.
I'd certainly brim it with 97RON or something to dilute that stale curse word... however, that said, we ran an '82 345 1.4 on unleaded and it was fine

My 244 came with a bottle of something in the boot, never used it TBH. Done maybe 2000 miles in it since we got it on normal unleaded and it seems to be fine, apart from the rate it goes through the stuff. I presume it was desigend to run on leaded.
Anyway I thought I heard or read or maybe made it up that ~
By the time they've ticked round to 100k or so the old engines that needed the lead have got so much of it in there that you can usually get away with it unless you're doing silly mileage or you've replaced the bits that need the lead for original spec ones.
Is that the case?

I just fill it up with unleaded. I suspect that it was designed to run on it anyway.

Not had any problems with Ford crossflows running on 95 and that's what I'm putting in the pop at the moment.

Your Volvo should be fine on standard unleaded, it might be worth backing the timing off a few degrees though, or if it pinks do the same Only fuel additive worth its salt (IHMO) is Millers VSP. Saying that, I only ever use the 'higher' octane fuels like Optimax, with the occasional bottle of Millers VSP just for kicks, although my engine would be fine on standard ULP it does respond a lot better to the higher octane stuff As donfisher says, unless you're really hammering along at 80 for thousands of miles a year, the 'lead memory' is usually sufficient to protect the engine. However - I've looked at Triumph engines (that were designed to run on leaded, yet close enough to ULP switchover to have it taken into account) and have been run on ULP for years, with no additives and few of them, if any, have shown any signs of valve recession

my starion prefers 97, and i throw some booster in for good measure. never tried 95 but being an 80's J i should think it wouldn't like it.
that said, i ran my capris on 95 with some of that castrol additive and they were fine. gotta be better than stale stuff?

I run the rover (it makes me wince) and used to run the capper on 97/99 ron - did it no harm.

To be honest I`ve just dug the Capri out of bed for the summer and the first thing I did was fill the f*cker up with 95 Ron Dixon cheap sh*t unleaded, didnt even occur to me to bung any additives in or owt. No pinking so far, I think you`d have to be doing business miles to make any real difference.
