Think I've killed my car. Advice anyone? Its a nice day so Ive been messing about under the bonnet. Car was fine last night. All Ive done is removed some bits - which Ive now put back just as they were (speed control actuator - don't even know what it does, I thought it was for the cruise control, so was testing driving without it to see if I could bin it) and Ive replaced the vacuum hose to the MAP sensor and the EGR valve. Thats it. when car hits 0 psi it whines, by the times its over 10 psi its a deafening roar. Sounds like either an air leak, or I was worried its the turbo whining cos its died, unconnected to my fettling. Cant find any air leaks anywhere between the turbo and the inlet manifold, so no air escaping there. Car drives fine but drives as if it has no turbo, it just whines and doesnt give me any boost. I thought the boost guage took its reading from the MAP sensor - which is obviously measuring air pressure in the manifold.

dammit - I'm on the PS3 and it only lets you type so much at a time Anyway, if there is extra pressure in the manifold then surely the turbo is doing its job and the air is getting to the inlet - so where is my power, and whats the noise? I thought maybe the wastegate was stuck open but then its wouldnt be showing any boost on the boost guage would it? Wouldnt it just sit there while thurbo just spun round and round and flowed air out the wastegate? I'm stumped and its driving me crazy.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

I once managed to knock the wastegate actuator clip off the arm. It flapped open when you reached Atmospheric 0 boost level and did make extra noise. I still reckon either off or split pipe or hose after the turbo before the intake (check your intercooler and hoses), or wastegate hose is off, or the wastegate actuator clip has come off the rod (hinged bar on the turbo that connects to the solid rod on the wastegate actuator). Normally the circlip breaks and it falls off. Especially happens if you have unclipped it recently to adjust the wastegate rod for more boost or to set base boost.
What car is it?
A lot of cars have silencers in the standard intakes, and you don't here the boost whistle. It should be quite a sweet slighly eery whistle that builds slightly in pitch and volume as boost builds.

its a starion. Ive not touched the wastegate or anything. Ive had a look but its still too hot so I can play with the actuator arm or owt yet. The intake is standard but the hoses are aftermarket, although Ive not put them on, there were on when I got it. Its all back to how it should be and Ive even re fitted the old vac hoses. Its never whined before, not that I could hear, this is really loud, louder than the exhaust, and power is noticably down, although boost guage isn't registering lower than it did.
Intake side of the turbo looks fine and it spins nicely and all the fins look normal. If the exhaust side was broken and making the whine, it wouldnt be as efficient and the boost guage wouldnt show boost would it? I don't understand how the guage looks normal but I've less power.
Thanks dude - I'll take a look more when shes cooled off.

It obviously sounds like a rushing air roar that you are hearing is that correct? If so I would reckon the problem here is definatley within the actuator not closing off and the air is escaping directly out of the wastegate, you are local aren't you dude. If you would like me to take a look at it give me a bell on 0791 4578510 and both me and Dene will have a look at it for you. We've been on the Strongbow but still compusmentis so if you are desperate the offer is there

Hang on, are you getting boost through the boost gauge? If that's the case then we could have another problem here, would need to hear it though to be honest.
Too much of a coincidence for the turbo to go just as you start fettling with it so I would almost certainly rule that out purely on probablility

Also have you reset your ECU by disconnecting the battery for 1/2 hour just in case
