Those TH look very cool. They're not the lightest wheel, but they're really strong.
Problem with BBS is everyone and there Nan and there's Nans Aunt has run them.

Just posting a quick update of the last few weeks with the car. So I'm now running the car as my daily as I have passed down my mighty 106 to my little sister for her first car and frankly its not been the most pleasant few weeks. The car is determined to make sure I have no money over Christmas, thinking of naming it good old Mr Scrooge. So first off just a couple more shots of the car since it's been lowered. Now it may look and handle better, but It's been a bit of a curse word lately. the rear top mounts creak and rattle, so they will be getting changed over the holidays. the rear bushes will be changed at the same time. It also had 3 wheel bearings fail simultaneously, I'ver never met anyone else who has had 3 go at the same time. It was making a horrible noise for about a month while I was waiting to get paid after starting a new job. The fan also failed and that caused me to overheat in traffic whilst on the way home, I replaced it back in June and it was a BMW part,so not happy about that one. It should have lasted years. Finally a simple bulb change turned into a 2 hour job today after the connectors holding the bulb in place came loose meaning that when I put the new bulb in it was pushing it back further into the housing/socket (not sure of its proper name) and shorting the circuit. Didn't want to pay full price for OEM units, so bought an aftermarket one, for some reason clear lenses cost £15.00 less than orange so I just bought them. They arrived today. Thought it was going to be a quick 10 minute job, but boy was I wrong. Car had to go up on jacks, wheels off and remove the brake cooling vents. Then the bumper had to come off, some of my bolts just did not want to shift so that added time trying every tool in the box. finally it was all done. Was worried the clear lenses would chav up the car, but once they were on I was fairly happy with the way they look. Thats it for now, more to come in the new year!!!

Hi Jim, hows things ?, just been looking through your post again, sorry to hear about your woes ! have you had to do anything else ? how about wheels & tyres ?
I've still got mine, its going in for a full windows out respray at the end of this month, its showing quite a bit of rust in the lower usual lower areas, also on the look-out for some 15" wheels (same style) think I may have found a good looking set, then I'll have to get tyres, probably go for Uniroyal Rainsport 3 ! not sure yet tho ! I'll be getting new springs & shocks too, its a wee bit lop-sided at the front, prob because of a collapsed spring, but I've had a good look underneath and I'd say all 4 springs & shocks best replaced, so still looking into that I don't really want to lower it, any suggestions where I can get standard springs ? Then, I MAY get an M tech 2 steering wheel, still on the fence with this one tho !! I've spent a few hours trying to clean up engine and engine bay, the aluminium bits not that easy ? I bought some raceglaze alubright, but didn't come out as good as they claim !! So, I'll give it another bash this w/e. Here's a before and after as it is now.
I've also taken the towbar off - at last, did it last w/e, easier than I thought, although the electrics still all attached and tucked between rear valance and spare wheel well, I think it may have been a factory fitted tow bar - if they do it ? just the way the bolts and everything looked, all sealed and painted etc !
Looks so much better eh ?
Anyhow, I've seem to have gone on a bit I've booked my place at the Silverstone Classic - camping and all hence all the work !! Anyone else going ? Early bird tickets - 2 4 1 are available until end on this month (March) = £99 for two, + infield pass for car.

Hows it going mate. You've done a great job on that engine bay and good to see that tow bar is off. I'm glad you've kept yours, always good to see another one being looked after properly.
I wouldn't go for the uniroyal's. I know the Rainsport 2 was a brilliant tyre, but for the 3 they have had a complete redesign and they are no where near as good as they used to be. I work for a classic car company now and we specialise in wheels and tyres. My boss fitted a set of Rainsport 3's to his car and after a month he got rid as he said the were shocking in the wet. I just put Kumho 27s on the rear of mine, and they are brilliant, its not broken traction once in the wet yet.
I would try GSF for the springs, one thing I will say is do not go lower. I have and it's completely changed the car. handling wise its brilliant, but as a daily speed bumps are a nightmare. I'm really happy with mine now, it's had loads of work to get it to where it is now but its all set for the summer. Only mod I'm thinking of doing is the steering rack, but it probably doesn't need it.
A customer gave me a weekend pass to the Goodwood 73rd members meeting this weekend. It is a brilliant event, less crowded than the revival and festival of speed with a lot more freedom to get amongst the cars.
That's not a bad price at all for the Silverstone Classic. I'm not sure if I'll be working there this year, I know i'm working for the Spring Sprint which is more of a vintage racing weekend.
Are you going to the Gathering This year?

Hi, again, you just caught me re springs & shocks !! was just about to buy today, I have been in touch with a company through ebay - pbt-racing in Gernany re Eibach pro kit, springs & shocks, lowers by 30mm, but that is for the "standard" E30 ride height, whereas the 318is is about 20mm lower in the first place ! so that would only mean lower by 10mm ? ! If my information is correct !? I am finding very very difficult to get standard springs & shocks for an E30 318is EVERYWHERE I look at, only seems to have lowered !! I don't really want to lower it, and gen BMW parts will cost in excess of £950
Congrats on the new job - who is it ? I am looking for 15" BBS (same style as whats on) wheels - hence me also looking for tyres, can you help me there ?
Early bird tickets for Silverstone Classic are available till end of this month. If you are working, let me know and I'll pop in and say hello. Where and when is the gathering ?
Re my engine, I had another go at it at the w/e, still not happy with it, but the whole bay needs a "better" going over, its very discoloured etc, but its so fiddly in there with lots of wee / tight nooks & crannies - plenty of knuckle and back of hand scraping going on not to mention a fair wee bit of tourettes !!
Re tyres, so Uniroyal R S 3's no good eh ! ?? thats a bummer, I had researched tyres thoroughly as well, and they were getting really good reviews !! my other choices were Dunlop SP Sport or Hankook Ventus V12 evos, I had V12 evos on the back on my last car - a W209 Merc CLK, and I was really pleased with them

£350, you've done well there! Any chance you can send me a photo of yours once they are fitted, really keen to get an idea of how they look on others. I think they look brilliant on M3's.

You should be absolutely fine with those springs, to be honest that is the height I wish mine was. I'm working for Motor wheel Service, we specialise in wire wheels, so I get to work on a lot of e-types, aston's MG's all the British sports cars of the 50's, 60's and 70's plus we have the odd Ferrari and Lambo in. I think I may grab a day ticket to the classic anyway, so closer to the time, we can sort out trying to bring the two cars together for a couple of photos or just watch a couple of races together. Some people get there engine bays high pressured washed, but I doubt thats recommended by most people on here or in the know. Dunlop Sp Sport is a very good tyre, sell a lot of those to my customers and I've heard nothing but good comments regarding the Hankooks. What polish do you use on your car?

Still trying to get my springs and shocks, that guy I was in touch with from pbt-racing has gone !! I've sent him 4 emails since Monday and he not replying, so still on the look-out ! Sounds like a great job I'd love to work with classic cars.
Be good to get together, my bro in-law is coming with me, he lives in Worcestershire, so he not got far to travel, we were at the GP last 2 years, so, hope to see quite a bit of good racing + 1000's of classic cars at the Classic.
Also still looking for 15" wheels, and I still not decided yet on which tyres, I'd better get my skates on I think !! My car goes in on Monday 30th for its respray.
Re polish - or do you mean wax ? as you had yours resprayed quite recently, you may not need so much of a polish ! BUT, if you want to show it, then, as your paint is quite fresh, you can try either Autoglym Super Resin Polish, or Meguiars Ultra Finishing Polish after washing, best with a D A polisher, although can be done by hand, then for wax, which is another mine field really, although a lot of the time, its down to personal preference ! I use Colinite 476s as regular sort of wax on all our cars (family) but I've got Bouncers Salute the Fruit I use as my "show wax" not so durable / long lasting, but gives a nice deep wet look, also, for this year, I have just bought me some Zaino Z8 Grand Finale, which I'll put on top of my show wax - although I probably wont apply that until I get to the show. Heres a couple of reflection shots of the roof of my 318is, you can see my cleaning stuff in cupboard on the wall
I'll keep you posted on paint job etc.

Time for an update!!
had an expensive month recently with the old buy and it looks like it will continue.
2 weeks ago I had a fuel pump stop working at 70 mph, leaving me in the middle of dual carriageway on painted lines and not even a hint that it was going to start again. Got it towed and replaced that day from the Porsche and Singer Specialist across the road at work, so you know the labour costs were an arm and a leg and that was still after mates rates.
Then the power steering fluid decided it should empty itself out on a fortnightly basis. This turned out to be leaking from the wrack and so a new wrack has been installed. It's off an e36 so slightly less turns and a much better weighted feel. It was an upgrade i always intended doing. The Rear discs and pads have been replaced, along with the brake lining and fluid.
On my way down to Cornwall last Friday a stone decided it would try and hitch a lift through the windscreen, scared the hell out of me. So it now has a nice new clear windscreen, but the bad news is I have lost my Retro Rides sticker

Really sad to have to post that 106e30, or Jim as he was to all that knew and loved him, sadly died on Wednesday evening. He had been in hospital for a few weeks but we had thought he was on the mend. In fact we had been hoping to take him home today. Reading through this thread reminded me just how much he loved his cars and how he loved being a part of the community here on RR.
I'll miss you Jim.

Please accept my condolences and pass on my deepest sympathy to all his family, friends and nearest and dearest. Sincerely - Ian - thechef

Thank you. Jim had been taken into hospital about 6 weeks ago, as he was having awful headaches. It turned out he had developed an abscess on his brain. They treated it and drained the fluid, which seemed to do the trick. In fact, he was due to be coming home to Cornwall today! After a lovely day with friends and family though, he was found at about 9.30pm Wednesday and his heart appears to have just stopped. Thankfully Jim didn't suffer and that's a huge comfort.
I am hoping to organise a bit of a gathering, with maybe a cruise through London one evening this month. This will most likely be the day of his funeral. I really hope as many of you as are able, will join us in saying goodbye to Jim? He loved cars and as I said earlier, he loved being a part of this forum. He was a lovely chap who I shall miss hugely. I cannot tell you how glad I am to have played a part in getting him his e30, which he cherished.
Anyway, feel free to spread the word and I hope to see you on the day.

Thanks for the information Mark, I doubt if I'll be able to make it to this memorable cruise, my deepest sympathy goes out to all his nearest and dearest - I so enjoyed our little chats on this forum - he did love his E30 I just cant understand the horrible twists of life sometimes - no words I can say, or even think off will ever make this any easier ! I have spent last w/e, and almost every evening this week giving my E30 318is the full Zaino treatment, I am hoping to finish it tomorrow, and I was intending to do a little write up and I intended posting pics etc, and I know Jim would have liked this and would have given me compliments and a big thumbs up, especially as his car and mine were twins It is at least some comfort he didn't suffer - Rest easy Jim - thinking of you X Once again Mark, my thoughts are with you and all his family, take care. thechef - Ian
