All around me, at work, at home and basically all my family completely don't understand what I see in old cars. I really hate being told my cars are a waste of money and I should scrap them and get a 'nice new car' It's insulting to be honest. What I do is turn it around by asking them what their hobbie or passion is, then rip the curse word out of it to their face so they can know how they just made me feel

just think of how boring modern cars tend to be, and how much of a contrast old modified cars are to that. and remember, cars tend to be a reflection of their owners

I've never really had to justify it because just about everyone I know understands.
The list of pros for owning an old car is huge.
Character Classic insurance Free RFL for pre '74 The fact that my £600 banger is quicker, more fun to drive and better looking than most cars on my street Character No electric handbrakes (come on nobody likes those - even idiots) Cheap parts (especially consumables like tyres and brake pads) Character The fact you can fix it at the side of the road without using a laptop
I really don't understand why anyone would go out and spend a fortune on a new car.

I'm lucky in that I get paid to play with old cars and those around me (outside of work) know my love for them. Don't think that micky taking is reserved for non car people though. At work we are forever winding each other up about our tastes in classics.
I used to work in banking some years ago and got those sorts of people though. You can't argue with that sort over aesthetics, so I worked financially. Pointing out how much they were loosing on their cars and how mine were going up in value.

I murder them with a hammer and bury them in the garden.
Or,.. you know... ignore them, because their opinion doesn't matter as I don't have such a fragile ego that I need other peoples validation.
Also I love some new cars, Maserati Granturismo for me please.

Ask them when was the last time a small boy ran off down the street saying "Mum, mum, come look at this cool car" as they pulled up somewhere.
Answer is probably never.
But then if they don't understand does their opinion matter anyway?

I don't really care what people think. I'm gonna do my thing no matter what. Just gets me peed off hearing someone who clearly does not understand telling me I'm wasting my life. Bit rude. Anyone got a hanky I'm welling up over here

I reckon the person who said you're "wasting your life" is wasting theirs by getting so upset over someone else's taste in cars.
Along with wasting their money on depreciation, finance, servicing & running costs. But they'd be WAAAAY to stupid to realise that, cos they buy all the marketing shoite from car companies about how you "need" a new car to fit in. SUCKERS!
Also, what joem83 said, I'm good at that

I must admit, I do like being asked "how much money do you loose on all these cars you buy.." as my answer is usually - "I very rarely loose any money on cars, how much money have you wasted on season tickets to go watch Sheffield *Crappy FC play?" *I am not biased, all Sheffield Football clubs are curse word.

It was a guy at work who told me to get a nice new car. He drives a 3 year old merc E class. I told him the gear box will malfunction before it gets to 5 years old (very common) and Mercedes will charge about £4000 to fix it.
