Myself & a mate have bought a £500 car to do Rust-2-Rome in again this year [ www.rust2rome.com ] We leave Edinburgh on Sunday 29th and sail from Dover on the 30th. The car is taxed untill 06/14, we have not yet had any documentation from the DVLA or retained the new keeper slip from the V5. Question is: Do i need to tax it for the two weeks we are not in the UK? Plan is to sell it when we get back anyway, so don't really want to spend a month's tax for two weeks driving in France & Italy!

Hi, to drive in Europe the car has to be legal (tax and MOT) in its country of origin.

As above, it should be taxed but it's a relatively minor motoring crime (not as bad as no insurance or cutting springs) so you should be alright.
What are yous in this time?

I'd be sure to tax it for real though, as your type of vehicle will surely attract police attention during your journey. If they discover your vehicle isn't taxed, you might be in trouble. Also in the event of an accident, insurance companies may refuse to pay out due to the vehicle not being taxed too. Just a word of warning

You are British and you will be driving through France. The French police absolutely love pulling British cars and going through everything with a fine toothcomb. So I'd play safe and make sure there's nothing they can do you for. Otherwise it will be a short stay in the Bastille and then off to Madame Guillotine. (Which was a British invention by the way. But don't tell the French that or it will make them ever so cross.)

Nowadays they just drive you to the nearest cash point and lighten your bank account of €100, don't dare ask for a receipt ;-) It would be cheaper to buy 6 months road tax and it'll make the car easier to sell in the UK. I'm pretty sure that they have ANPR cameras in the ports now too and I'm sure you can go to your local DVLA and get tax there and then with out a V5C.

How do i tax the car with no paper work then? Walk into your local DVLA office, take proof of insurance and your MOT. Then explain the situation, you've just purchased the car, the DVLA have the V5 and you need to tax it, they can do it there and then for you. They will have the sellers name/address on their system, you will need to provide this. The last time I taxed a UK car was in a similar scenario, I purchased it to bring it over and sell here. DVLA can be very helpful when you're trying to give them money.

joda: According to this you can do it at the post office but it'll cost you an extra £25 because you need to apply for the V5 at the same time. Worth a walk to the Post Office to find out... Edited to say: This link to the V61 form has the correct wording: www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/269833/V62_061213.pdfOther links on Google have the old wording that refer you to the DVLA Local Office if you don't have a V5. The closure of these LOs mean that you can apply for the form and re-tax the car at the same time at a PO that does road tax.

Thanks Andrew, but why do i need to pay for a logbook when the DVLA have been sent the V5c from the seller last week ? Its a 1998 1.8 Honda Accord we got this year, we had a Escort van but it was pig slow, so splashed out on this!

Totally agree but you stand a good chance of being humped by foreign Plod if anything happens along the way. Maybe confirm at the PO that you CAN do it this way then wait until the postie has been on Saturday AM before doing it? Give the DVLA another couple of days? In terms of DVLA turnaround at the moment, I'm still waiting on V5s for two W124s I bought first week of this month.

I thought you were going in that Scimittar I saw on Facebook, by the way. The Accord sounds too safe for your tastes...
Where in Edinburgh are you leaving from on Sunday?

You need "paperwork" (V5 and insurance) for travelling in Europe anyway. I've been stopped and asked for it by French Police (who you don't want to mess with !). I'm still awaiting the confirmation of new keeper letter for the sale of a car that I sent the V5 off over a month ago so assume they have a backlog as normally it comes within days. What happened to the new keeper slip as that allows you to tax ?

The Amy Winehouse 124? thats quality bit of history that, would love to say that i had her in my car boot!! The Scimitar was bought for the trip, but my Mates to tall and its pretty cramped, shame as it have been good fun! We are leaving from south queensfery, we will be there from about 7 with a departure of 9am. 53 cars booked in this year!!

welshpug: I promise I will do a search and replace on all my posts and change "road tax" to RFL... We are leaving from south queensfery, we will be there from about 7 with a departure of 9am. 53 cars booked in this year!! Magic, we'll see you there. I might bring the Winehouse car but the rear spheres are humped so it bounces down the road and makes us all feel a bit sick. I paid close to Rust To Rome money for it, by the way...
