Mods - If this sort of post is frowned upon, please delete..
Right guys, I am about to embark on buying myself something I have not owned before and it would appear that both of the cars I am considering are quite highly regarded on RR so thought I would ask your opinions..
I mostly want something that could sit around at the back of the drive that could waft me to & from Santa Pod and Shakespear Raceway once a month during summer and also get used to go on Sat/Sunday jaunts wherever I feel the need to visit. My budget would be about 3k and it would appear I can get quite a lot of Disco or XJ40 for my money? Green laning doesn't interest me, nor would I need any more than four seats so size isn't a criteria, nor fuel economy.
The main factors for me are - easy to maintain, comfortable, be 1995 or older (For insurance) and be able to fit straight through from cat back exhausts without issues (Love V8 burble!)
So, what would you choose & why...

Pre 95 / 19+ year old Disco will almost certainly already be suffering from serious rot so that leaves the Jag. What about a Range Rover P38 V8 ?

I was under the impression the suspension on P38's was uber unreliable. Don't want to have to spend money sorting it?

I love Land/ Range rovers but for what you describe it would be the jag for me. Both will eat money and something will always fall off but who cares when you are wafting along in that much luxury. Have a couple of pics.

It's worth mentioning that the pre-95 XJ that you mention will be a straight-six, rather than a V8. Looks like it'll be a V12 then!

Ah right - you live n learn - The one I have seen is a 1996 which I can get away with. It has had a replacement engine at 35k from Jaguar under warranty and also a rebuilt auto box with receipts. I was told these cars are bullet proof so interesting one of you saying it would 'Eat money'?

The straight 6 Jag XJ40 and the facelift X300 have a supposedly bullet proof engine and my XJ40 4.0 has been smooth and comfortable so far, pretty effortless. The Jag X308 XJ8 looks very similar to the X300 but has the V8 engine, these are all post 96' though I think, the V8 in those is ok, but they had issues with Nikasil cylinder liners when new (though most should be fine by now) and timing chain tensioners failing too I think. Of course theres always the V12 'XJ40' (think its technially XJ81 or something) if you want a bit more speed, should make a decent noise too, although the straight 6 sounds pretty good too £1300 got me this 1993 4.0 Sovereign with a couple of electrical gremlins (later XJ40's are much better with electrics), good condition interior, straight exterior with only one little bit of bubbling on a front wing and 77,000 miles on the clock Also as for it 'eating money' I've just done a service where all the parts were very reasonably priced, other spares don't seem too bad at all, fuel isn't amazing but then you're not looking at a big jag for fuel economy, it will however do high 20's to 30mpg on a motorway run

Gearbox issues kill most 3.2 or 4.0 V8 X308 Jags
I bagged an 2002 S type 4.2 v8 for about £1600
No such issues with the 4.2

XJ8 3.2 is not very quick (still more than adequate), but the engine is smooth as silk and has a very turbine like engine note. Not spacious inside, but a great balance between handling and comfort.
If you can stretch the budget a XK8 could be an option, has 4.0l. Production started around '95 and is more special for special occasions you want to use. Or do you need at least 4 seats?

I had a V8 disco for about 6 years. I found it a great car and I still miss it. It was really reliable. Never really let me down. Parts and service items were all reasonable. It had a LPG conversion so was fairly cheap to run. Let it go for 2k in the end.

Got be the Jaaag, Folk let you out at junctions in a Jaaag, Mechanicals are pretty sound, just weird electric gremlins and the old tin worm. Go for the Jaaag. and spend glorious hours polishing those curves And you can say things like this

I have to be honest here, I'm buggered if I know what all the fuss about Discoverys is about. Ive just had to sell my Dads one, unfortunately he wont be able to drive again, and its the first time ive driven one. I was never expecting one to be so utterly agricultural, its barely a step upfrom a Landy. I don't doubt that the V8, in auto form, would feel better but you never feel like you are driving it,more like piloting an unwieldy tug boat. As suggested, a Range Rover would be MUCH better and even better still, the Jag. Horses for courses and all that but, I reckon, you would be happy to be in the Jag all day long and everyday but the Discovery would, in the end, wear your tolerance a little thin. Maybe.

Folk let you out at junctions in a Jaaag, I can attest to this and if they don't, that big bonnet and 4 odd litres of Jaaaaag power means you soon get out

All great advice. Do you all think the straight six would sound good with a straight through cat back exhaust?

Have a look on youtube for videos of straight six and V8 jags with sporty exhausts, and see which you prefer the sound of. I had a '90 XJ40 about 10 years ago, fantastic cars....... But how about a V8 7 series! I used to have an e32 and the build quality is in another world compared to the jag, e38's are pocket money now aswell..

I was under the impression the suspension on P38's was uber unreliable. Don't want to have to spend money sorting it? P38 suspension is airbags - no different to those fitted to modified cars ! Problem is if used off road then they can get damaged, pipes pulled off etc. For road use you can "drop it down into the weeds" at the flick of a switch and it'll be reasonably reliable. Easy to change an airbag if needed and plenty of good second hand about for little money. Then there is always the option of changing to springs with bolt on conversion. Have you thought about a Lexus LS400 ? Paul H

HMMM - food for thought guys - never considered a 7 series or LS400 as I didn't think I could insure them on a classic policy but I suppose its no different to a Jag etc
Might check out a few P38's too - thanks guys

All great advice. Do you all think the straight six would sound good with a straight through cat back exhaust? It sounds pretty good as standard to me once it gets above 3000rpm, just a bit quiet as you would expect, so a decent aftermarket system would make a decent growl I would have thought. Will never sound like a V8 though if thats what you really want A mate has a LS400 which feels bigger than the Jag, the V8 in that is quite subdued too, removal of a few silencers would no doubt louden things up a bit, I find the Jag to be a more focused drive though where the LS was very barge like For more inspiration, see the Barges thread retrorides.proboards.com/thread/164353/big-bargain-barges#.U6vhvLHLKwAThe Jag V8's sound quite good I reckon, theres a couple videos of them on youtube

get yourself a Jeep cherokee XJ 4.0 high output straight 6 limited. Loads of gizmos, leather, right age, comfortable and a little rarer than the disco. Loads of mods possible. I'm a bit biased as I have a 97 XJ which I love.
