Honda Shuttle/ Odyssey are pretty cheap and probable better put together than the Spanish build Galaxy/Sharan.
Peugeot 806/ Citroen Synergie/ Fiat Ulysse is annother contender, but not brillant in the reliability department.

7 seats is easy enough but the luggage space for 7 people is the tricky bit for estates and people carriers.
So the larger seated vans would be best option unless you're planning on a roof box too?

Stay retro and get a Montego Clubman (I think that was what it was called). My dad had one, but you will have to pick your least favorite kids to put in the rear facing seat in the boot!

We had a Zafira 7 seater. Brilliant if you wanted to transport 7 people. Rubbish if you wanted to take any luggage too. When we did what you want to do, we took two cars (in-laws followed us in their car) then just used our zaf for days out when we got there. Enough room in the tiny rear luggage space for lunch. I'd go for the LDV option.

As others have said, not much difference between all the full-size people carriers like Galaxys, Sharans etc. Steer clear of the Nissan Serena (or whatever it was called!). None of them have much space for luggage though. There are a lot of shagged people carriers about. It might be hard to find a cheap good 'un!
The 'converted van' type are a much better bet if you want to take luggage. The VW Caravelle/Transporter is almost as refined and comfortable as a car. It would be my choice for a long journey.
Personally, I don't like the LDVs. Absurdly heavy clutches and vague steering. Not fun.
I work for a car rental company and have driven loads of examples of all these vehicles, for what it's worth! And yes, they are crazy expensive to hire......

WOW! Loving this thread! Thanks for all your suggestions guys - yes, the load lugging capability does need to be considered as well as the 7 seats.. I'm not all that sure about an LDV, but I do like the look of the T3/4s... off to eBay I go! Keep the suggestions coming guys - and I'll post a for sale ad for the Saab this weekend too

I think they may be nigh on extinct now The VW later vans are a good thought mind T4's I looked at last year and much goodliness is found

7 adults or 4 adults and 3 kids? a mercedes E class (w210 or W124) is an excellent option, but not suitable for 7 adults Yeah, I'd go for a W124.

At risk of injecting a dull reality check...you might want to get an insurance quote before looking too hard at minibus style vans. When my wife was poorly I was looking at getting one and the insurance was outrageous: £700 - £1000 (then late 40s, +10 yrs NCB, low risk area, etc). On the other hand the Shalhamaxy is a good choice. If you do get one, I've got some homemade roof bars you can have

I had this exact decision to make at the beginning of the year needed to take the family to a wedding in France and needed a car to seat 7 and room for luggage a hire car for a week was going to cost a small fortune so I decided to buy a car and sell it after I found a fiat Ulysses 2.0 Hdi for £130 that needed a clutch a clutch cost £95 fitted it over a weekend went all the way to France and back good on fuel about 45 to the gallon and was great to drive when we got back I sold it for £550 on Gumtree and after working out the cost of buying the car and clutch the profit paid for the fuel I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one.
