Hi guys, Me and the family are off to Scotland in a month and due to the grandparents coming too, will need a 7 seater... Seems silly, in my mind, to spend £600 on a hire car when the Saab is up for sale and I could buy one for a couple of months before selling it on after the holidays... Is that a good plan? If so, the Saab is probably gonna get me £1500-2000, and gumtree shows 7seaters of all shapes and sizes, but whet would people recommend? There's Galaxys, Troopers, Mecs, all sorts to choose from, so I just need dome suggestions! Cheers y'all!

Haha, I had thought of sending them on the train, but then we'd still need to collect them at the other end I actually quite like the idea of a bus, but it may be a bit toooo big....

7 adults or 4 adults and 3 kids?
a mercedes E class (w210 or W124) is an excellent option, but not suitable for 7 adults

The LDV bus is a sure-fire win...!!! With a roof-rack like the one pictured you can bung all your gubbins (safely) on the top and have a hugely roomy cabin to travel in... They may be sluggish and a bit noisy but they're excellent value and soooo much fun... You can even let the nippers loose on the paints and rollers to 'decorate' the exterior for extra giggle value...!!!

we have a ldv convoy at work we removed all the 17 seats and bought 7 nice ones from the scrap yard all with belts then proceeded to drive it all the way to italy and back with 7 of us all our baggage etc it never missed a beat returned almost 40 mpg this was about 8 years ago we still have it and have done about 50,000 miles in it without a single break down just regular servicing. the ford bannana engine seams unburstable unlike the transit piece of curse word we also have with the later 2,4 in it . yes its not a sports car but masses of space and they are so cheap

Chrysler Grand Voyager. They're 8-seaters though, but so much more spacious than others mentioned.

LDV's are not much fun to drive though. In fact its probably the least fun van to drive. Stick with a mpv or smaller more car like vans like the old scudo/dispatch 8 seaters. Non turbo's are really good on fuel 50ish mpg.

That kinda money could buy you a rough VW T3 caravelle. I took my T2 (8 seat microbus) round Spain and France last year, was something I won't forget. I bought it and got it on the road for less than your budget (7 years ago) Either that or a MK1 or MK2 Espace. Mk1 Galaxy/Sharan are nice, but dull to drive.

You should get a good petrol Sharan/Galaxy/Alhambra or T4 Caravelle for that money. Diesel is more desirable but most in that price range will be ex taxis with fictional mileage on the clocks. In fact you can get most of the ones listed with the 2.9 VR6 engine

Buy a cheap vr with 120+000 miles and its ripe for a timing chain to go. Bear that in mind.
