Going to see an early Mk2 Farina tomorrow.... What should I look for? Rust, rust and more rust? The A40 Farina OC's website is seemingly about as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike, just wondered if anyone here had any tips..... Gratitude in advance

Yeah, check for rust in the usual BMC places ie. all over the car Structural ares are obviously important but I guess its up to you how much bubbling or filler you're willing to live with in other areas. They're fairly simple vehicles really and mechanical stuff is so easy to get you probably shouldn't worry too much about it - would be a good bargaining tool though if its a bit rattly or got a whining diff or something. A Mk 2 has hydraulic brakes on the back but I'm not sure what type of master cylinder it has. If its still like the A35 one and under the floor then make sure its OK as I know A35 brake parts are hard to find / expensive. Electrics will all be common Lucas stuff so again no major concerns. Basically if the price is right YOU MUST BUY IT!!!!

I always found the cills (inner&outer) were a dodgy area, and also a cross member behind the rad front panel at low level. Bottom of doors ,especially bootlid .And on the early ones ,the area round where the rear brake cyl mounts (think it was o/side ,just in front of the rear wheel,)cant quite remember! think Ive got some bits if you need 'em ..I'll have a gander in the shed. BTW ,I used MK3 Cortina cills I think !

This wouldn't be a red one spotted in a certain weekly publication would it Brian? If it is, seems good value.
Rust is the killer and having recently seen a very bad example, there is no end to where they seem to rot.

Ahem. Says 1962 on the advert, logbook says 1960 (which would make it a series 1), chassis numbers match, but the car's a later Series 2 with the fake wood dash etc etc. Has paperwork pertaining to it being plate-raped in 1993. Still with me? And it's got a 1275 in it. But the logbook says 948cc. And it's still got drum brakes. Went well though, lovely to drive, and pulled like a train....just wouldn't stop! So I offered him £550, he wouldn't budge from his £600, and as I was about to up the ante by £25 he started ranting on about how it was worth £1000 anyway, and loads of people were after it. So I left him my number and told him the offer of £550 stands if he doesn't manage to sell it to someone who couldnt see past the shiny paint and Spridget wheels. Then to cap it all the speedo's gone tits-up on The Scrote, apparently we were doing 165mph on the M54 on the way home So b0ll0cks to it, I'm off to see a 1970 Arrow-shape Minx tomorrow afternoon

stay away from that. if it was wroth a K it would be advertised at a k. ignorant bar attending persons don't deserve any money for their cars, and if he was like that to me id have stood there waiting for him to finish, then calmly explained everything that is wrong with the car and that id be informing the dvla if he didnt shut his huge ass piehole and say goodbye.
and I'm not a keyboard bandit, ive done that. lol.

Ohh I did....I explained to him that maybe a 'Condition 1' motor was worth a grand, but that this one was a long way from being anywhere near...and the nefarious way it had been plate-raped devalued it further. In his defence he'd only owned it for four years so I'm not implicating him in any dodgy history it may/may not have, and nor would I have threatened to either. Despite all that it drove well- extremely well with that 1275 under the bonnet- and as a fun summer blastabout with 6 month's MOT is still worth five hundred nicker or so. As long you didn't have to brake much. ;D But TBH I'm not the sort of bloke who takes kindly to a seller waving his mobile at me wittering on about how many phone calls he's had, so with a withering look from me that said 'go take your face for a sh1t' I bade him goodbye. And if you're reading this Mr. Vendor, next time you have people round to look at a car, would it be too much to ask that you have a bath first? His BO reminded me of when Arnie Cunningham buys the Plymouth Fury from Roland LeBay in the book 'Christine' by Steven Spielberg

I can see what you're saying...but if it drove OK I'd have been driving it home for the sake of the extra fifty quid! I'd also probably find all sorts of things wrong with it the next day and be wishing I'd walked away! ;D

Hmmmm....The front brakes would take a midget disc transplant to sort...probably about £100 for the bits?quite easy to do . The rears ie drums would cost a fair bit due to whatever you buy will prob need re-conning.Poss a Midg servo (cheapest) or Maybe a remote servo (expensive ,as rare to find s/hand.) MK2 a40 brakes will stop you ,with a servo and harder linings ,but depends how hard you drive it !....just my 2p....!!
