Hi,
No 1 son recently passed his test. The quest for "reasonable" insurance is underway. While on provisional licence he was on wife's insurance (01 Focus 1.6) for only moderately unreasonable money. Now he's passed they want 4x!
He will be getting a car or his own - most likely an older Lupo, Arosa, Polo, Cinquecento or some other sub 1.0 car from the late 90s.
So far quotes vary from £821 (Cinquecento with Diamond) to £ 3,600 (Lupo 1.0 with Swinton young drivers). The pattern seems to be that anyone claiming to be young driver specialists actually specialises in ripping them off with higher premiums and truly amazing compulsory excesses. The best quote from a "reputable" outfit is a little over £1,100 from Direct Line (I have a policy with them which seems to help). We've tried all kinds of vehicle, limiting mileage, adding ageing relatives (like me!). I really don't like the idea of a telematics box, partly 'cause it's a bit too 1984 for me and partly because we might want to use the car for autotesting or PCTs - which probably would get them all bothered even though it would be none of their business.
Internet quoting sites seem to vary day by day, sometimes by quite large amounts.
Any bright ideas on car choice or insurance company recommendation gratefully received.
Cheers
Nick
