So who else does this? I'm knew to this and seeing as I now have a ratty old discovery that I really don't care about, I thought I might as well have some fun with it. I'm completely new to off tarmac driving but I will be going with an experienced group. So whats the nack to not getting stuck, I'm going to be attempting lanes in the cambrian mountains. My car is mostly stock but does have all terrain tyres fitted and a tow bar. Pretty much nothing else is different that stock. I don't intend it to stay this way though. I might even have a heavy duty winch bumper fitted but that depends if I win it. I will be taking a few things with me for safety sake but apart from the basics of tools and survival gear what would you suggest I take with me? Oh and this is the beasty thats going.

'Technically' you shouldn't be driving 'greenlanes' with the idea of getting stuck.
Tread lightly,if you going with an experienced and responsible group you should be ok. Been laning loads of times, standard 110 csw with all terrains fitted. The idea is not to cause damages to the lane,keep to the lane,do not deviate off the right of way,make sure you have up to maps.
If in doubt,don't drive it.
Having said that, it's great fun.

Tyre pressures are the key to all off-road driving. Bring a decent air compressor with you (at least one in the group) and drop your pressures to suit the conditions. If you are driving on highway pressures, you're more likely to get stuck in soft stuff, and more likely to damage a tyre on rocks. Ask the experienced locals what pressures are right. If you're in really soft stuff, you can go as low as 12 psi without much risk of rolling the tyre off the bead. Obviously, you have to reduce your speed to suit the low pressures as well.

I'm yet to have ever got my Landy stuck and id rather not break the habit. As I said I am going with an experienced group who have well kitted vehicles. I'm told the route will should easily be passable for my vehicle bar one lane which I will probably avoid, the issue with that one I am told will be the long overhang on a discovery. I will be joining GlASS as well. Its my first time and I want to do this legally and as a land owner myself I don't want to damage others land unnecessarily.

If going with a group you should be ok,and you seem to have the right attitude already.
The first time I went laning I took loads of stuff ..... The times after I took wet weather gear just in case,flask and packed lunch.
Recovery gear was always kept in the Landy, as well as some basic tools. Just made sure I knew where I was going.
I used to live nr the Ridgeway and used to go for a drive quite often when it was legal to do so, first time was with a group,after that either on my own or with another Landy Once you've done it a couple of times you'll sus out what you need.
Miss those days ...it was about 30miles long that you go then ....

Sorry seem to have lost most of my original reply but most of it seems to have been covered anyway, Strata Florida is legendary....you might want to remove the towbar too as its going to be the lowest point at the back..

I was gonna say remove the towbar as well lol, it will act like a plough. also remove anything likely to get shaken off, strata has a area that's a bit rippley lol I used to be in a jeep club. 1 golden rule NEVER GO OFF PISTE stay on the tracks that your supposed to be on. if you do get stuck never, unless its that or nothing let anyone without the proper equipment do a "snatch recovery" fnar fnar I had the boot floor buckled in my jeep from this cause the fool who did it didn't have a proper rope. never did strata but it looks awesome. but the club I was in did it a lot. most of all enjoy it its fun

I would be livid if someone did that and chewed up my land so I won't do that to some one else. I'm gutted though cause my tubular front winch bumper hasn't arrived yet

Lots of river crossings but because we have had little rain recently they were nice and shallow. Nothing above the front bumper height, saying that the TD5 disco managed to kill his alternator going through water but the alternators on that engine really don't like getting wet anyway.

looks like you had a good day, excellent pics seen a few rr suffer water problems a stock disco is a much underated offroader, personaly just a good choice of tyres is all it takes
