Just looking at the "radically modified" section on the dvla website would suggest Binky may keep the Toyota registration based on the points system, I thought there was enough new metal in it to get a brand new reg, I hope it doesn't get a Q It should be on a Q-plate, if indeed they even plan to make it road legal. There is no scenario where is could retain the Celica reg number due to the Mini shell being used. 5 point of the 8 point minimum MUST be from the shell of the car relating to the VRM. So Celica shell for the Celica reg, Mini shell for the Mini reg. However, there aren't enough relevant Mini parts remaining to make up the 8 points either. An age-related plate can be applied if only one donor car source has been used, which would apply in this instance but ONLY if being used in a brand new recognised manufacturer of kit car. Transposing parts into a second-hand shell doesn't qualify. A Brand New registration number can only be applied if the vehicle conforms to full Type Approval of a mass-produced car, which means it is required to conform to all the latest Safety Regs (so airbags throughout, pedestrian safety testing), latest Euro emission Regs etc, so there's no chance a Mini body with no airbags and a 20-year old Celica engine is going to pass those. So given the lack of points accrued through the Radically Altered Vehicle scheme, the only remaining option is BIVA. As had already been stated, the application of a Q-plate shouldn't have the negative stigma anymore. Anyone who has managed to get a car to pass the BIVA test should wear their Q-plate with pride. Makes Sense, just looked to me that when you added the points up from the list - engine - transmission - suspension - axles and steering, made enough points to keep the Celica reg, I admit the shell isn't a type approved 'kit' though and yes it's likely it Won't have airbags, but it's got a collapsible steering colom and hes built a fire wall between the fuel tank and passenger cabin, You're right about wearing a Q with pride if it's passed testing with something that his made with his own hands and made a bloody good job of it too not to mention entertaining thousands whilst doing it It's just I still think of a Q plate as something that's been cobbled together with random bits that can't be dated or a 're registered stolen recovered car ... Either way it will be awesome 🙌

There is however possibility that it would receive a reg of the same age as the Celica as the DVSA do have some provision for vehicles assembled from a single donor car.
I suppose all will become clear eventually.

Top grammar tips! Bought = purchased. Brought = relocated Lose = misplace/opposite of win. Loose = your mum

And I know of someone who built a Zcars mini in to a brand new shell and as he made a fire wall and a collapsible steering wheel it was given a new reg (04) in this case. But both these examples were not one-off bodys/chassis ... could be a while before we find out 😉

Nick does say repeatedly in several episodes that he intends to drive it on the road. The ONLY way he can legally do this is with a BIVA and a Q. Whilst his engineering standards are impeccable, I have grave doubts about some parts of the original mini shape meeting BIVA requirements, like the external body seams, the sharp radius change at the front of the bonnet and the sticky out door and boot handles, not to mention the sharp edged original mini bonnet badge. It would be a terrible shame if he spent all this time keeping it looking like a mini, only to have to reshape it beyond recognition to please the radius counters at BIVA. I REALLY hope it doesn't come to that!

3SGTE, the unloved and unpopular underdog. Fukc knows why. When I rev 3 converted my MR2, I only got £400 for the rev 2 turbo lump, complete with ECU and AFM. Those who know, know, though.

Never realized I could watch for more than 30 minutes about fabricating an heating system.
Great stuff as usual.

I love the Binky project. For the first time though I don’t really understand why Nick went to all the trouble to replace the motor on the rear wiper when the original would have worked straight “out of the box”. The front setup, with its auto sensing and multiple settings was clever though, even if it was a step further than I’d have taken.
I’d also have used SOH to work out that crank length, rather than TOA and Pythagoras. 😜
