Been thinking of putting some plastic windows into a car for a while now. Just got some questions that need answering please; Can I use the stuff from a diy shop or does it have to be special for automotive use? can I get it pre tinted i.e smoked? I know that racers use it all the time but i want to use it on the front door windows and have it work up and down as well. Why do I only see opening flaps on all the cars I see. Is it because they get scratched easily or is the glass it replaces curved and so wont work? Any people done it and can offer advice? All comments welcome....................discuss

^^ Like speedman said, someone on here with the black Escort^^
Don't think you can use DIY stuff because it will crack and go smokey, (non see through).
I presume racers ones don't open purely to loose weight, winder mechs= un-necesary weight.

1. make them bolt in, cos if you push a plastic window in the middle hard enough it pops out! the wind can do this too as youre driving along if youve got the front windows open. they need bolting or rivetting at least every 6" round the edge. plus if they touch anything solid E.G. window frame, mounting tabs, put a squige of sealer between the window and the mount or they rattle.
2. use proper polycarbonate sheet, not perspex, polycarbonate doesnt shatter, perspex does.
3.you can get it tinted to pretty much any colour under the sun, I'm having yellowy orange in the merc and blue in the Asedan.
4.don't ever make a windscreen out of it. wipers will destroy it, and once its got oil on it youll never be able to see through it again.
5.if you make drop glass with it, itll get scratched to curse word in no time. it may not look too bad in the day, but if youre driving at night or in the wet, they may as well be frosted glass!!

Aah yep that from when I did mine out of the stuff from B&Q. Although it said interior use only it's still looking fine 5 months of outdoor exposure later or however long its been. It does scratch very easily though, but i'm not too fussed about that myself.

fibresports in basildon can make poly windows, they can even make curved ones.
