Worth checking the oil level in the box and/or throwing some STP in it (simple things first!)

Try www.realoem.com/bmw/ That site has all BMW parts listed with blown up diagrams and part numbers so you can cross reference, I presume your car has the M10 engine in it in which case there are lots of cars you can get gearboxes from including a number of different 5 speeds, cars such as 1502, 1602, 2002, E21, early e30's and more, unfortunately I chucked one of these gearboxes out about 10 months ago.

boxes are getrag's. you'll want an e12 or e21 m20 fitting bearbox. if you're prepared to chop up the prop (or get a specialist to do it) then stick a 323i 5 speeder in, it'll make the car 150% better. it has to be a an e12/21 box because of the speedo drive. also m10 engines are different bell housing patterns, so they're out unfortunatly. are you sure its not the diff? try draining the fluids and see if metallic sludge falls out, that'll be a bit of a giveaway I've got some gearboxes on the shelf, mainly e21 and some e12 diffs still around. however, i'm here. HTH

Dragging this up, not been online for ages but back now.
Its not the diff. After getting some pro advice everyone says its the layshaft bearings in the box and it will probably go on forever, even if it is anoying. I tried changing oil but no difference. As its a low miler i might be better of getting the box rebuilt (£400 drive in drive out). Apparantly they were prone to bearing failure, is this true?
I might change the box for a 5 speed though, will i need a different flywheel/clutch?
thanks.
Pics now very soon ;D
Also, anyone got any e12 front wings or boot badge (there curved on e12's)
Come to think of it, any e12 bits would be good, they seem hard to get bits for!

probably got some e12 bits laying around, I'll have a nose round. and the boot badges are the same as early e28, e23 and e24. later e28s, e23's and even e30s fit, just a little different in design

Cool, let me know if you find anything. Are the other boot badges you mention curved then?
