Excuse my ignorance on these cars but how is it that a straight 6 engine ends in twin exhausts? Where do they split etc?

Cheers for the comments chaps  Excuse my ignorance on these cars but how is it that a straight 6 engine ends in twin exhausts? Where do they split etc? Ermm I've not had much of a look at the exhaust system to be honest, but if I remember correctly theres two cast manifolds with two downpipes which I think go into one before splitting back into two parallel pipes under the car before they go out to each side to exit at the back I do remember seeing quite a few silencers however (and cats as mine is a later model)  |

The centre box splits the exhaust pipe into two on an XJ40. I am sure it is the same on the X300s as well. How did I miss this? That looks to be a superb buy for its condition and rust. I would keep on top of the latter however; XJ40s do love to rust. How is your Cruise control panel looking? I ask as I have a spare knocking around I was meant to throw into mine but I never did. I'd agree with dbdb. They drive much nicer on the 16" wheels (and the tyre sizes being more common) over the 15s. Whilst I am biased there (I had an early JaguarSport XJR 4.0) the other cars on 15" wheels felt vague and I would not have called the XJR firm. I do miss that car from time to time it has to be said. One place I would check (to avoid costly repairs) is under the rear window seal. If it is rusting I would seriously consider spending some cash on getting it repainted. It is a common rot spot on XJ40s (and from what I have seen X300s to a smaller degree as well). Once it rots it is a very tricky area to repair with the boot filling up with water leading to obvious results). This may have been iffy on my car, and I was shocked to see signs of rust here on a friend's X308 XJR in mint condition (with the seal being lifted). Basically it's a water trap and quite a bad one. I look forward to seeing this out and about. Much kudos to the purchase . |

Everytime someone starts a new Jag thread, I get an insatiable urge to scratch an itch! As a consequence, I immediately swing over to Sulit to see if, miraculously, the prices have halved since I last looked the other week.

Haha that did make me laugh, at those prices I'd be tempted to import one in from England instead! :/ Yeah, but as I've said elsewhere, whilst the shipping is cheap enough and the fact that it must be a left hooker isn't a real issue, the fun starts when it arrives here. There are official customs duties and VAT to pay then there's the "White Guy wants to get his car back, ha, ha, ha" tax, which can be as much again. Basically, you can, as a minimum, double the cost of whatever you spend and then, of course, there's the distinct possibility of it "never arriving" at all and is now the proud property of some port official. It can be a whole world of pain and I don't want to go there! |

Ooooh that does look very nice, could probably get a 90% as good one for less money though, but with the low mileage and service history that looks to be worth the money assuming its not hiding any rust of course |

The Jaag need is getting stonger!
Had an XJ40 3.6 a fair few years ago, and damn it was cooler than cool,
On board computer had dementia mind, but I lived with that!!

Ah yes thats what I remember seeing from my brief foray under the car When I was clearing out the boot, I did pull the carpet away from the rear bulkhead to have a look and it all looks good around the base of the rear window, I remembered seeing another 40 on here that had rusted badly there so was sure to double check! The only rust on the car seems to be limited to the front passenger side wing, I did manage to poke a screwdriver through some of the bubbly bits near the lower front of the wing, so will have to pay some attention to it at some point. The wing overall is in decent condition though Cheers I've actually put a fair few amount of miles on it since I got it, its so easy to just get in and drive! But I need to get out in the B more when I get back to Coventry, the problem with having the novelty of a new car (with a stonking great 6) For the pair of mid silencers I would get a pair of mid silencer substitution pipes. You can buy them from AJ6 engineering or get an exhaust place to make a set up (Mr. Tyre near you should do the trick . It is good to see that the rear scuttle is in good order. I remember a certain 5th Gear Presenter getting this area rewelded on his. Whilst the results were great (the car is still on the road today from it being quite rotten) I dread to think what it cost him. The front you can get sorted out soonish. I ended up leaving a bubble on the door of my Stag which was becoming more of an eyesore. Despite new metal being let into the door the result was not too bad in the end from a finish and cost basis, compared to what the Porker was (that was both rear arches). Enjoy the AJ6 engine. I guess the MPG is not all too different to the 'B? |

Mmm I did have a look at the AJ6 engineering website a little while back, not sure if I want to go to the expense yet.. but may get a quote from Mr tyre, the only problem is that if I get the Jag sounding better, I'll be more inclined to floor it everywhere Yeah I know of a couple places that should be able to sort the front wing, so hopefully I'll get it looked into before winter comes around as its really the only main bit of bodywork letting the car down. Ah I do enjoy it, the sound and power above 3000 or so rpm is quite addictive the only problem is the gearbox keeps changing up too early no matter how hard I put my foot down so I think a bit of investigation may be required into the kickdown switch.. (Or its just me! ) The MPG is probably about the same if not a little worse, the worst part being that I can actually see the mpg on the onboard computer.. so I just leave that on the odometer setting instead |

My RR had the opposite problem in that it would hang in gear and you needed to lift off the accelerator slightly to get it to change up. Anyway after a good clean of the TPS and the throttle body + a bit of time with the Rovacom to get it running spot on, I remembered something about cable adjustment and how sensitive the autobox is to this. Set them up as per factory and hey presto, proper changes again. Amazing how a tiny adjustment made such a huge difference.
Dunno if the Jag's the same, but worth a look?

Probably not a bad shot, I did have a quick look at the cables at the throttle body and they seem to be working freely. The kickdown on this Jag is supposedly an electric kickdown I think? the car will kick down just sometimes when I think it should, it doesn't.. I'll need to look into it a bit more when I get back to the car. I will be cleaning out the intake and throttle body when I get a chance thoug |

So your fog lights have melted too! No one dare switch on the later Hella flame throwers!
Jaguar doesn’t have a good track record with fog lights. The earlier Lucas ones slung under the bumper fill up with water, fizz and rust. Jaguar got the later flush fitted Hella type watertight, but they burst into flames!
That green connector in your photograph is not used on UK cars. It is the connector for the side marker lamps fitted in the bumpers of USA and Canadian cars.
The headlamp washers have their own pump, fitted to the washer bottle behind the front of the right hand front wing liner. I suspect the pump has failed and will need to be repaired or replaced for the headlamp washers to work.
I have never driven a 4 litre XJ40, only 3.2 litre and 3.6 litre cars. The 4 litre has an electronically controlled transmission (a ZF4HP24), whereas the 3.2 and 3.6 both use a hydraulically controlled transmission (a ZF4HP22) which determines throttle openings using a transmission cable fitted to the throttle linkage on top of the throttle body.
Unfortunately, I can't comment directly on the changeup points of the 4 litre, but presuming it is similar in operation to my 3.2, I would say your car is not kicking down properly.
I tried full throttle acceleration 'kick down' tonight at 50-odd mph in my car this evening. The transmission changes down into second gear quite brutally, holding it to 5,750 rpm (about 250 rpm into the red) which is the full-throttle change up point on a 3.2 litre XJ40.
I think it warrants further investigation if yours isn't changing down and holding gears.
Unfortunately, having never driven a 4 litre car, I don't know the change up points under kickdown, nor do I understand the effect of changing the mode on the transmission from 'Normal' to Sport. My car has a Jaguar badge where yours has a switch.
I do know however that calling it "Sports mode" is a bit of marketing. In reality, the "Normal" setting is an economy mode - the non-electronic ZF transmission was effectively in permanent sports mode. It may be that the car is designed to shift lazily in "Normal" mode to aid fuel economy figures. Does you car kick down sharply and hold the gears in "Sports mode"?

These have now largely been resolved, but a number of new member’s accounts have been lost – though their posts still exist. Unfortunately yours seems to be one of them! The kick down switch is located under the foam sound insulation by the throttle pedal. IIRC it has a purple connector. Daft though it sounds, somewhere in the dark recesses of my memory, I have a feeling I have read of an owner whose XJ wasn't kicking down that found the connector had been disconnected for some reason! Worth the 5 minutes it would take to check!!

David haha yeah, I suspect the drivers side one isn't far behind as the light output from it is poor to say the least, I think the foglights will be taking on a more ornamental role from now on, not that I'd ever used them.. Ah thats good to know about the plug, when I get back to the car I'll get underneath and check out the washer pump, have had a second hand pump in my watch list for a while now on ebay Hmm from what you say about the experience in your car, it would seem that mine may be holding back somewhat, sport mode does make the box hold on to gears for longer but you do seem to have to keep your foot absolutely planted to keep it from changing up.. Maybe I've got a Jag that just wants to be economical As an aside, I'm sure the car once felt a bit more responsive in the 'no first' mode than normal... When I get back to the car I will do a few more experiments to see what performance I'm getting in the different modes Yeah I did notice the forum seems to have had some issues, will get my username back up and running there once I get a chance as its still going to be a helpful place to be, will check out jag lovers as well |

Ha! I will also check that the kick down switch is plugged in the dash panel under the wheel did feel a bit loose so maybe someone has been playing around there in the past.. |

David So I tried out the 50mph full throttle kick down today, in normal mode it didn't kick down at all and just held what I assume was 4th. In 'sport' mode it kicked down one gear and accelerated a bit more quickly. So perhaps the normal mode is an economy mode.. haven't had a look at the switch wiring yet so theres more investigation to be done. In other news, the Jag gave me a mini scare when I started it for the first time after getting back from a weeks holiday, the ABS and brake warning lights came on with the engine.. a bit of brake pumping and they went off within a few metres, so I'm assuming it was just a jag electrical quirk, the brakes still work fine Also today I picked up some new wheels  For me there is one style of wheel that just works on these jags and that is the lattice style wheel, particularly in 16" flavour rather than the more common 15"   I've been told they're the rarer 16x8 Sport pack upgrade wheels and originally came off an XJ12, the width means theres a nice bit of dishhh  A couple of the tyres are a little old, but I'll swap around till I get a good set of 5 I'm also planning to paint the centres black despite the fact that I said that I'd never paint a crosspoke alloy again after the MG wheels hopefully I'll get these sorted a bit quicker, they're huge so they're taking up too much space in the flat already haha |
