Hello everyone Recently, my Grandad bought this from a house clearence. It's a 1948 Lanchester LD10, and upon first appearence, it's nothing special, just an estate version - but it's the ONLY estate version in existance. It's listed on the DVLA site as a shooting break, however, the Lanchester owners club have no recognition of there ever being an estate version - we have been told it could be a complete one off! It's stood in someone back yard for years and years after the engine was removed. We are unaware as of why the engine was removed, but everything came with the car. The metalwork on the car is relatively solid, bar the front wings, it's just the wood work which is going to be a masive task - However, a friend of my Grandad's has agreed to give it a go - surely it's got to be worth doing if it's the only one in existance?! If anyone has anymore information on this car, it would be hugely appreciated. Please let me know and I will pass on any information to my Grandad. Anyway, enough waffling, have some pictures! What do we all think then ?!

Hell its MOT exempt so its good to go as it is!!! Seriously if all the metal work is intact, from my point of view the wooden framing is simple especially as you have patterns to work from given the price and availablity of modern powertools.
Someone obviously cared about it enough to keep it on the DVLA computer so it might not have been that long ago that it was actually on the road.
Look forward to seeing more of it as you get into it, I don't expect there is any evidence of a coachbuilders plate or stamp anywhere? I would think that it may have been a special built for a wealthy first owner - a previous owners record from the DVLA would be interesting assuming its not had to be re-registered. If you had a copy of the old card log book it would be even better..

It's been off the road for around 40 years if i remember rightly, we are still unsure why yet though. He has sent away for the logbook, and is waiting to get one back from DVLA.

That will look nice when it's done. You say it might be a one off, which makes the job even more worthwhile. I don't know much about Lanchesters but in the forties and early fifties there were quite a lot of conversions like this as new cars were hard to come by, so they would often be converted to fit more passengers n luggage. The woodwork on yours looks like it was well made so it was obviously a step up market from a van with windows which would have been more common back in the day. The odd arrangement of he rear side windows are the biggest give away that it's not a factory woodie. That's my guess anyway. Hope you find out more history on this.

This should be a good project... Will be keeping an eye on this one. You know a car is old when it's listed on the dvla as a shooting break!

Hope this goes to a good home. With resources to bring it back to life. And that the new owner will take over this thread.
