Does anyone know anything about Isle of Man registered cars, and the legalities of the number plates?
My Mini was first registered 1994 in Isle of Man with a plate something like CMN***X (have it in documentation somewhere), but then got re-registered in 1999 with a standard UK plate (L***KVU).
What I would like to do is get the old Isle of Man plate back, but I don't know if this is possible, or how I would go about doing it? I think it is legal to use Isle of Man plates in the UK from what I have read?
I thought about buying it as a personal plate, but it doesn't seem to be available - possibly because it's previously been registered as a real plate?

You would have to reside in the Isle of Man.... Isle of Man info: 'm/categories/travel,-traffic-and-motoring/drivers-and-vehicles/vehicle-registration-and-licensing/vehicle-registration/ The UK DVLA see an Isle of Man car as a foreign car..and it would need to be re-registered in uk...and pay duty etc...

OK well that's upsetting! Where would I stand on getting it as a personalised plate at a cost?
It conforms to the UK standard (3 letters-3 numbers-1 letter) and would be a 1981 (?) plate so is no newer than my car.

Contact the bit of the DVLA that deals with sales of unallocated numbers to see if it is available. The only people entitled to run on Manx plates are those who have an address in the IOM

If you enter the reg here - www.hpicheck.com/click GO then click the "Buy Now" box. It will then display if allocated to any vehicle and doesn't cost you a penny. Paul H

I ***THINK*** that because it has been previously registered to a vehicle, it will be an interesting one to try and purchase from the DVLA.
They will also probably pull up the fact that it was, when first registered, an IOM plate, not a GB plate, then ask you for your IOM address before telling you whether they are willing to entertain the possibility of selling it to you.

Unless I'm missing something here UK DVLA will not/cannot issue any plates with MN marker (prefix or suffix) in it personal plate or otherwise. They are purely reserved for Manx issued plates. IOM are the only ones who can issue a plate with MN in it. As you don't live in IOM you are stuffed.

Hi there spoke to my auntie last night as they stay in laxey on the i.o.m and she was saying you would have to be a resident . She visits often but if she were to move back for good she would have to get the car plates back on to uk plates . Hope this helps.

Ok thanks guys! I wasn't sure if the IOM plates were from the same "pool" as UK plates so to speak, or if they could be duplicates of UK plates because they are a different style of plate completely. I was hoping they were separate so I could just buy the UK version as a personal plate.
Doesn't sound likely I'll be able to get it back then! Bit of a shame really!

They are different authorities are they not, it would be the same as trying to buy a plate that was allocated in any other country shouldn't make a difference as long as it hasn't been already allocated here?

DVLA don't issue plates with the same MN identifier as I of M to avoid confusion so therefore no such number will be available. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_registration_plates_of_the_Isle_of_Man - second section headed "Format" explains that since 1903 there have been no mainland plates issued with the same number as I of M.
