I've fitted new bearings to a spare pair of halfshafts (well, a garage did) and I'm now in the process of removing the old shafts from the Atlas axle on my '85 Laser so I can slide in the 'new' ones. I have a slide hammer, however no matter how hard I try, I can't get the old shaft out. Drum is off, all 4 retaining bolts removed, both sides of the car raised up, slide hammer hooked through access holes on the end of the shaft, but it's just not pulling out... And this is the first side! Any ideas? Annoyingly I need the car back on the road by 5pm... Any advice is much appreciated! Cheers!

I had to slide a 10kg weight onto the slide hammer to get the halfshafts on my axle out

Using a hook through the hole isn't ideal you really need the adapter that bolts to the hub, using a hook though the hole pulls off centre although TBH i never use a slide hammer i just fit an old wheel on backwards and beat the cr@p out of it with a club hammer till the half shaft comes out, done hundreds that way, some rust in place and can be a right PITA, all i can say is keep belting the cr@p aut of it.

This is my method - although sometimes it take a sledge hammer as club not heavy enough ! Paul H

Yeah I thought that maybe because I wasn't pulling from the centre I'm just wasting a lot of energy! I don't have an adapter, and no scrap metal to fashion one, so if the slide hammer doesn't work with some more weight I'll grab a spare wheel and a hammer!

FFS... The only spare wheel I have lying around is a Laser 4 spoke that won't bolt on backwards, and it's got a big fat tyre on there so I don't have much room to swing a hammer unless I'm hitting just the very bottom edge. Plus I'm not sure my hammer is big enough! I'm contemplating putting it back together, hoping that I've not disturbed the shaft and bearing too much, and heading out to see if I can buy better tools for the job... Either that or keep going with the slide hammer! Not a great way to spend a day off work... Thanks for the tips so far guys

you can use a wheel with a tyre on and wack it with the biggest bit of timber you can swing in there, if your worried about the wheel you can use a bit of wood to prevent damage

I had to abandon the halfshaft swapping earlier due to needing to get back on the road to pick somebody up and go sort out some other jobs. On the plus side, I have Friday off next week too, and a lot of ideas from you lot to try out!

i have had a really difficult one in the past, smacking a wheel didnt work, a slide hammer didnt work so ended up gently heated the axle casing where the bearing sits and slide hammer shifted it in the end

Halfshafts out and swapped! I ended up going to see Dave at Penrhyn Rally Centre who had no issue getting the shafts out. So pleased with the job, and with all my bearings now being new it's nice and quiet on the carriageway. Ah! Bliss!
Thanks everybody for your help and advice. Big thanks to Dave for getting the job done!
Now to solve my leaky fuel pressure regulator... see other thread...
