........that I might not make it to the RR show or the Imp Club Show (same weekend) At the moment the car is 250 miles away back in Essex, locked in the garage, under a barrage of boxes, with a whole host of problems. There is no cooling system basically. I can't get the bloody thing to keep water. I've had to disconnect the heater (which was broken anyway) to try and eliminate possibilities of blockages etc. The engine doesn't exactly run very well either. The front wing is FUBAR'D to the point that the MOT man may decide he doesn't like it enough to pass it- the only thing holding the headlight in is a stick of wood wedged behind it and the wing I'm in last teaching week of uni, which means I have a month of exams ahead. Then the day after I finish exams I'm for a clinical trial to earn some money to pay off the overdraft for the summer (read: squander on the car) I have a new engine to go in, and a new radiator, which SHOULD mean that I don't have the cooling problems and hopefully a nicely running engine, but I only have some of June and August, and July to do it in. Have I mentioned I've never even seen the bottom end of an engine before? And of course, then I have to think about getting the bloody thing MOT'd.................. I've been chatting on here about what I want it to look like with fancy roof racks and nice wheels, but if it ain't going anywhere I've got much more important things to worry about! I can't help but think this is going to be a fairly tall order for someone like myself that knows approximately f**k all!? I have had plenty of offers of help from the owners club which I will have to take them up on, and are much appreciated. But so far, everytime I've had help to get one thing working.... something else has gone My car in all it's [former] glory......

Are you in anyway local to me? I once worked on an Imp engine in a mate's Bond. It didn't seem so hard.
Theres a first time for everything, and you have as good a chance of making it work as anyone else.

I'm in Essex or Leeds, so not unfortunately!
Apologies, I've just read that back and it is a fair old whiny little git post with very little point isn't it? I've just always promised not to give up on this car, but it's starting to hit home that perhaps I can't really afford to keep going with it....?
I've always wanted to build an engine, so I guess now is as good a time as any really...... just whether it works or not is a different matter!

Just buy a £200 grotter off the bay if you need to tootle to shows in some old wheelZ. You could snaffle something useable and retro quite cheap if you look hard enough....

frank i share your pain.
I'm not going to make any shows this year in the Amazon either.
I'm super in debt because of the studio and welshed contracts, the MOT runs out in 3 days and it's going to need a bumload of welding and probably a new \ recon exhaust to see it through.
But I'm buggered if I'm going to bodge it.

why not buy a cheap old heap - early 90s hatch back to bum around in and still have some fun and then take your time and do the imp when you can afford to [both with money and time] ? sounds easy, but you've gotta get insurance on the "stand in car" which will probably be a killer?

sounds easy, but you've gotta get insurance on the "stand in car" which will probably be a killer? That's exactly the problem, I'm an 18 year old male, in a not brilliant post code, and now I have the issue of a claim to my name as well The imps insurance was paid as one lump in September, so wouldn't even be able to save from direct debits or whatever. Grrr, guess I just gotta get the imp going! Good or bad idea- going back to essex, grabbing new block, crank, pistons etc, and building it up in my bedroom here at uni?!

Welcome to owning an old car. Even when things are going fine with a car there is normally a nagging doubt in the back of your mind wondering what the next cost will be.
don't get too fed up at this stage, learn as you go along and treat every problem as a new opportunity.
If thats no good hit it with a big hammer. That always works.

Never give up! The chevanne finally hit the road again after nerely two years (was going to be a quick tidy up, turned into a marathon rebuild!) Worth it though

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

i can sympathise frank and mr tiki is right there is an art to keeping an imp going, look at mine, got nicked -fixed it,starter solenoid packed up-got that fixed, coil then packs up-and i fixed that too (and broke the volvo in the process) now my exhaust has fallen off,but i'll fix that too.and thats this year! you just nedd a bit of percy verance to see you through.

Cheers for the encouragement guys Much needed at the moment! The most annoying thing is having to sit here helplessly whilst the car does nothing!! Oh well, I've always said, It will be worth it in the end It's just getting there thats the tricky bit If I was going to give up on it, I'd have done so by now I guess....... 'Course it will be worth it
