Gave the car a nice clean on saturday. by the next day it was covered in curse word off the tree above my parking space, which is pretty annoying. If I get a cover for it, is that likely to attract attention from chavs and other low-lifes? ie "I wonder what's under there, must be something nice for the owner to bother covering it up. Oh it's just a battered old capri, lets bash it up a bit more" edit: here's a pic so people can see the parking space (sometimes it can be the one closer to the road instead) and the general ghetto-ness of the area I live in (it's not that bad really I guess tbh)

I don't personaly think a car cover attracts the undesireables, but then again i live in Surrey. In my case though covering my car nightly in the wind and rain has probably done more harm than good. I mean look, my lovely rattle can paint job is coming off revealing the red primer underneath! ;D

My £15 Argos 'one size fits none' car cover lasted three days, with additional rope around the car to hold it on, before a windy night vanished it.

It's because my cover is too big for the car really and the wind just rubs it back and forward over the paint. It's only a primer top coat aswell I think but hey on my car I just think it adds to its character Edit: just noticed you are in Surrey too D'oh. Where abouts? By the way my cover came from Blackbushe Sunday maket and cost me £25 two years ago but i see the same one in auto factors for £35 + quite frequently.

I'm in New Malden, I think really it's London, but for some reason it's always Surrey in the address (plus it sounds nicer! was just gonna get a halfords type one, hadn't really considered chafing and stopping it blowing away!

Only down the road really, i'm in Epsom. My cover has a loop at the front which i tie to my T-bars it also has eyelets either side at the bottom through which i put a bungee cord across the underneath of the car if i can be bothered. Which as of today when i took that pic i didn't hence its on the floor beside the car!

Not to go totally off topic,... but I was born and raised in Ewell ... lived there for 23 years then moved to Southfields ... then Wales... then Bradford-On-Avon [/Life history] I've got a car cover for my old camper van,.. cost about £100.. was worth its weight in gold on frosty mornings.. and at halloween with people egging cars on our road.

Covers
Use em if you have too but only when they are the lesser of two evils
- Paint gets chaffed/rubbed/scratched - Heat builds up under a cover and you can get micro blisters - Water lays between cover and car and can also cause paintwork issues - They don't last forever if used all the time (I reckon 3-4 years max before they look decidedly ropey) - I've got three covers and all are in various states of repair all have had 2-5 years of use
If I parked my car under trees that dropped sap on the paintwork and also inhabited by feathered wildlife that shat on the car I'd use a cover - no if's but's or maybe's
Note this is probably cos I'm not a big fan of cleaning and polishing cars ;D

If it's only birdcrap issues then how about just a square of tarpaulin? About £8 from B&Q or £1.50 from casn'n'carry, eyelets every metre and it'll cover the roof/windows and probably most of the bonnet and boot depending on the shape of your car. Just bungee it at every eyelet and it'll be safe.
No good for keeping people from knowing what you've got but it'll keep most of the crud off, and as it's not covering the whole car will probably breathe a bit better, the air will get under the edges.

Cleaning cars, what is this you speak of?

OT: Ah cool, i know Epsom and Ewell well, used to go to college at Nescot in Ewell, and still go to the Spring Tavern (pub) in Ewell sometimes, and the cinema in Epsom. Both very nice places, I'll have to keep an eye out for that Beetle. I have to agree with tetsujin, it does actually look quite good like that!
The suggestion from Pillock sounds like a good compromise, so might give that a try (although I am a bit hesitant to take advice from someone called "pillock" lol!!)
