Erm, what are the chances that i've killed the Perkins in the motorhome by sticking Ultimate unleaded in instead of Ultimate diesel? Done a couple of miles till it conked out and has refused to start - now i know why.
Any suggestions as to what to do next would be much appreciated. And yes, i'm already standing in a corner with a large hat with D for dunce on it perched on my head.........

my mate did this to his 405 TD a couple of weeks ago.
We pumped it all out by hand on the bulb in the engine bay (yes took a while and yes we put it into cans not just dumped it)
Then when the 15 litres of unleaded were out we stuck in 10 litres of diesel and bobs your uncle. Ran rough to the fual sation but then we topped it off with a full tank, no problems since, hes done about 700 miles so touch wood.

You can cause serious damage to the fuel pump as diesel is the a lubricant in a diesel fuel pump where as petrol has no lubricating properties, this probably isn't why it wont run now but may come and haunt you later.

I would agree about damage to the pump but i doubt that driving a couple of miles and then re-filling with diesel will cause anything appreciable damage wise.

Drain it out, change the fuel filter and refill it with diesel. As a diesel fitter i see loads of this kind of thing and its very rare that it can cause serious damage as long as its got out of the system as soon as possible. Although i did once see an injection pump blown to bits where the compresion had ignited the petrol, but then that was a peugeot and they're generally made of cheese anyway ;D

I've done it the other way round with a mate's van. We just lobbed in loads of petrol to dilute it as much as we could. It was a bit iffy for a while, but we got away with it in the end!

I put 50 litres of unleaded in a new golf TDI, it got about 3 miles...
Drained it, put diesel in it, it's done 30k since no probs.
It'll be fine...

Cheers for the advice chaps. Drained the tank but a bit more to get out yet, blown the lines back into the tank, removed as much fuel out of lines etc as possible, replaced the fuel filter (was on the list of to do items anyway and did the air filer too ;D) and also got some new glow plugs to go in while i'm at it.
Bit of luck it'll be running again tomorrow. They put these engines in tractors, so should be able to take a little mishap!
Oh, and missed out on the TD van, so no engine swaps for the time being either.

Sounds like you're going to be OK I once followed a new 5 series BMW police car into a petrol station. Copper chats to me as he's filling up (I was driving the Oxford and it was late at night) then goes quiet as he realises he's just stuck unleaded into his diesel traffic car......

I did this to my Rover 420Di, the engine of which is derived from the Perkins Prima - I pumped as much petrol out of the tank as I could with the fuel filter primer and topped it up with diesel, it ran fine after that.
