a friend of mine has bought a cd player with a line in input hole on the front of the face unit. what she wanted to do is plug an mp3 player in to it, she has the correct lead (like a double ended headphone jack) but it doesn't seem to work.
it's a kenwood and her manual doesn't give an explanation of what it does, so do you guys know what the hole is for? or how she can use an mp3 player with it
any advice would be really gratefully recieved!

but is the purpose of a line in, so that she can play an mp3 player through it?

thinking about it, is it a tape playing one or a cd/mp3 one? if it isnt mp3 compatible that would explain why it doesnt work, or is it a tape one, that'll be to plug a cd player into.

it's a kenwood cd head unit...with a line in thing on it, is there such a thing as line out? and if so...what would it be used for?

Line in will play any source through the HU you play into it, provided it is a line in - be it an MP3 player, tape player, CD player, whatever - it's just an analogue signal Yes, you can get line outs - these are outputs that provide an output at a level sufficient to drive the input of an amplifier.

Also on some headunits you have to hit the pause button to make the input switch over (Alpine 7909 for instance) but as it seems to be a new HU its unlikely.
I reckon that its either the fact that the correct source isn't selected or the vol isn't up on the MP3 player
