I bought a 95 Jeep Cherokee 4 Litre a while back for use as a tow vehicle. I successfully swapped engines and it runs like a charm now. There's just one problem.
The new engine is out of a '97 Cherokee. Unfortunately in '97 Chrysler switched to a different ECU which appears to control the instruments. Whereas the original engine has two temperature sensors, one in or near the thermostat housing for engine management, and the other at the top rear of the cylinder head for the temperature guage, the new one has only a single sensor at the thermostat housing.
As I see it I have three choices. Get the current head drilled and tapped for the sensor, swap in the old cylinder head or fly blind without a functioning temperature gauge. I really don't want to pull the head if I can help it (although it doesn't look to be too difficult a job).
Does anyone know if it would be possible to drill and tap the current cylinder head with the engine in the car?
