Is there such a thing? Thinking about going down this route as a parts hauler but would like to do it in style ;D Any ideas/thoughts/pictures for inspiration would be much appreciated!

Audi 100 Avant Diesel? Uber-rare and not that roomy but super-cool! Rover 825D Fastback though not an estate is pretty roomy and looks good in wedgy Mk1 form, also pretty quick with nearly 120bhp/200 lb/ft under the bonnet. You might be able to find a Mk2 Ford Granny estate with the woefully underpowered n/a Pug 2.3 engine.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Are Pug Diesel lumps really as bullet proof as everybody suggests? What's the best to go for in terms of reliability with cheap and available parts? An Audi could be nice but I'm wondering about the cost of parts, any Japanese options out there?

Aye, I'd say 505 as well.
Run forever, look cool, huge space.

Later smaller Peugeot diesels suffer from cooling problems, head-gaskets can pop quite easily. The older ones really are tough though. Japanese options - did the T12 Bluebird estate come with a 2.0D option? Some '80s Camrys sold in the UK came with a diesel lump but I'm not sure if they were available in estate form.

OK I'm biased, but... W123 300TE, if you can find one. The other W123 diesels are pretty slow (not that the 3.0 is fast...). All of them will last forever though

Audi 100 estate, amazingly cool. Ive been very tempted a few times but never taken the plunge. Nice and cheap now too.

I don't really want to spend more than a grand as it's only going to bit used for hauling bits and bobs around. This is also why I've said diesel in an effort to get more mpg and something with an available source of cheap parts in case it breaks down. This probably puts most J-tin out of the window. It doesn't have to be retro but something a bit different would be cool. As much as I loved my old W115 Merc I want something else now, did the Audi 100 come in a diesel version? Condition of bodywork wouldn't matter too much as I'll probably satin matt black it

What about a middle-aged transhit [sic] ?
I came this -> <- close to buying one the other day, manky bodywork, 2.5 diesel with a tow hitch,
Went for £270 in the end... and I got severly chastised by the local RR mob for not buying. Could look HAWT with some satin black action going down.
They really will run forever, chip fat is cheap and so is isopon. ;D

The 100 Avant did come in diesel form, I remember one kicking about this area.
pog- don't most Transhit diesels run Lucas fuel pumps? Veg. oil + Lucas = injector pump death.

Diesel Montegos are actually pretty good - the Perkins designed engine gave a good turn of speed, and the handling on Montys was OK, BUT
a, finding one that isn't rusted to sh!t, b, if you do, stopping it rusting to sh!t whilst actually using it,
are both damn near impossible.
I'd vote Merc w123/4 estate - preferably in beige/puke green/dark orange/matt grey or any of those other amazingly dull & unattractive colours they offered from the factory!
