That herald plate is amazing!
As for square plates so long as the lettering is the correct size and spacing they are fine
I'm contemplating a square one for the rx8

Slightly off topic but how about square plates on the rear or front like old FIAT have? As long as the number is spread over two lines, not three, unless the vehicle is pre 73, they're fine.

As long as the plate is of the style/ font for the year the car was registered then you won't get any bother regardless of when the plate itself was made. Framptons........ www.pl8s.co.uk/CarPlates.html

full size square plates: Fully legal, and available at most places who supply numberplates
cut down/reshaped/motorbike plates... no
To sum it up: if your car CAME with a certain type of plate, it's legal. If it didn't, it's not

My vitesse wears a motorbike size square plate on the rear and stick on letters on top of the bonnet. A little bit naughty as neither are particularly clear (the front more so) but technically they're legal as it's a 1969 car so I 'get away' with a lot ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) I did get a ticket once for having German style plates on my 1990 merc 190e but I knew they were a risk

I thought it was rather obvious, I implied "available when released", rather than directly bolted to the car ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) lol

You said "if it CAME with them then they are legal".. For anyone reading this and not understanding the legalities of black and silver plates, pressed plates , different fonts and the usual german plate questions, it could be very confusing.

It is also legal to use the smaller motorbike font plates...... but only on American cars where the plate recess is often too small to accept a British plate in standard font! Had them on my 84 Caddy Seville and never got grief from plod or MOT.
