As title really. I must admit that in my darker, less informed days, I saw these only girls cars, how wrong huh!! I have recently seen some stonking examples and now I need one!! I am a bit of a speed freak though so standard spec just ain't gonna do it so what are the common upgrades? Which engines make for a good transplant for example? Ta

I think I might be the only one on here with one, so here goes: MineThere are no easy options for engine transplants although V8's, s2000 and 626 v6's have been done. Most tuners will fit a turbo or supercharger kit as the engine has a miserable compression ratio so adapts to forced induction life quite easily. The low compression also means that valves don't impact the pistons when cambelts break - so no big worry). Most kits take power to about 160-180bhp but most owners go a bit further and manage around 200. Various qualities of kits are available and bare bones greddy turbos go for just over a grand and the Flying Miata big power kits are much more. NA tuning is almost impossible - some folks like to fit carbs and IRTB's but mostly for kicks rather than power!

best money to be spent is a turbo kit, it can be done on the cheap with a manifold of egay & your local powerflow chap can make other pipes cheaply, this leaves you with the option of an upgraded turbo from the getgo! with 200minature japanease ponys in these motors they are the tits, great fun, i had a 1.6 eunos & in the wet you could drift round islands at less than 30mph, a great great car & i'd have another for sure, spares are easy to get of egay, someone is alweays selling whole systems off J import cars, but yeah! a turbo is the cheapest & best route, it sounds pricey to put a grand in it from the start but you defo wont regret it, its well worth it! i think i have a strutbrace that go's behind the seats from seatbelt mount to seatbelt mount, they are a piece of curse word to lower! no special tools needed, i done it at home in the entry & it handles great after & look good! wheels are easy to get, style wise they don't need much, de-badge it, front spoiler, get rid of the rear spoiler if it has one, they're better without (to me) eunos has an lsd as standard too i think! a hardtop in matching bodycolour makes it look a more blokey piece of kit too! employ the same tuning methods as te nissan 200 chaps & you'll make it rip along, 15second or less 1/4 mile is'nt har to reach, i'd say they are a selfish car as they have no space at all, just enjoy driving it

I think it would be turbos as they seem to be a bit cheaper and give a bit more power, but I would personally get a supercharger for the constant power! I need to get a SC myself, but I'm a poor architecture student!

Stick a V8 in it. You can buy a kit now from Monster Motorsports. I think they are based in California. If I recall correctly there used to be a company in Vancouver, BC, Canada that also did these conversions. It's designed to fit a small block Ford V8 and T5 (apparently the T5 is lighter than the stock Mazda gearbox by about 40 lbs.) www.monstermiata.com/Monster_Miata_Specs.asp

i'm a turbo fan as I love turbo lag & a big kick when it comes on boost! wooooooosssshhhh, see you later hater! hehe! a supercharger is good as the power is well......there but a turbo you know theres a hesitation, you get the aticipation then wallop you are a fliying miata :OP
also I recommend changing to poly bushes & put new arb droplinks on, slamm it to the floor, put some greenstuff pads on it then up your power, you'll love it!
oh yeah & put really curse word-brand but soft compound tyres on it! it will grip like..........well you know!

I've driven a turbocharged one and they are fantastic fun, adds a whole new dimension to the MX-5. Definitely worth doing.
