I was talking to my sons mates, and not one of them could tell me anything about ww1 and very little about ww2. its a disgrace that some schools don't teach it.lest we forget.
It's even worse in the Philippines, they don't teach history at all in schools. My girls know about Independence Day because they get time off school, but had no idea about independence from whom!
I took them over to Corregidor Island a couple of weeks ago. It was just about the last stronghold of American troops during the Japanese invasion and after it fell, the surrender of the Philippines was signed. I wanted to see it, but I really didn't know how they would take to it. Being 11 and 13, Facebook, boy-bands and anything pink are the usual interests, but is turned out they really enjoyed it. We had a brilliant guide who told a very harrowing story extremely well and in the museum there were pictures of bits of Manila during the subsequent liberation, so they could relate directly to places they recognise. So now, I'm having to learn more about WW2 in the Pacific as they've taken a real interest.
I just hope that Grizz type displays spark off questions and lead to a better understanding of history.
Oh and Grizz, best of luck with the Macmillan fundraising. Did the Mac 4x4 Challenge when I still lived in the UK and had a ball. A very worthwhile cause!
