Hello folks,
I write this as a cautionary tale more then anything, but also sometimes you need to get these things off your chest a little bit.
Yesterday i was working on the CX welding up the last bits of the inner front arch job. I got a phone call from my wife and she was in a bit of a state. There had been an accident and they were not involved but they needed me to come and get them.
It seems that as she approached a local junction known and used by us all the time. She had been about 10 yards from the giveway line when she heard a bang, the RTA type big bang, and the following flying of debris etc. Luckily her and my boys were totally un hit and un hurt but a Ford KA had turned accross the path of a transit coming the other way on the road she was planning on turning onto, its a 60mph limit stretch of road. The lady driver of the KA either didnt look or didnt see the transit, one of those things, human error.
Unfortunatly this is where things get worse as the lady in the KA had two boys of around 10 or so in the car with her and despite the fact she was relatively OK they were both killed outright at the scene. The KA had been virtually ripped in two and scattered far and wide. The transit had tried to swere to avoid her but obviously hit hard and this then rolled a couple of times onto the verge at the side of the road, the driver not seriously hurt.
I thank god, allah, buddah, lady luck and every other manner of things that my family were not caught up more directly and I have to say as an ex-recovery worker I've seen some accidents but as i had to go and pick up the wife and boys, as the police wanted to leave her renault where it was for recording and measuring etc , the scene of the accident was truly nasty. I'm very proud of my wife and boys as they were calmer and more sensible then i would really have given them credit for. My elder lad called the police and helped direct traffic as did my wife and my younger boy sat and talked tothe lady of the KA until the emergency services arrived, to be honest i don't think she realised what had happened at the time and she certainly didnt realise the passengers had been killed, which was probably for the best.
So please be careful out there, please try to pay attention and most of all try and stay safe.
Thanks for putting up with my ramblings.

Sobering thoughts. Sounds like you have two fine lads there, you must be justifiably proud of 'em. I've been driving for a living for 20-odd years and what must be now over a million miles, in that time I've only ever witnessed two fatal accidents. Both of them though gave me nightmares for weeks afterwards, so I'm sure you don't need me to tell you to give your wife and two boys lots of extra attention for a while. My heart goes out to the poor woman in the Ka and the guy driving the Transit, God alone knows how they must be feeling today.

Its curse word like that that makes you realise you are mortal. And sometimes it is needed. It is a balance to the Hammond style "I am a driving god" moments we all feel. Terrible that a family should be so damaged for ever, but anyone who saw it will get a wake up call that the thin tin box that does such a good job of isolating us from other people is just a thin tin box.

We were wondering what it was, and my mum was saying hope it wasnt something to do with kids or something down east carlton.
I just live down the road in corby and work in cottingham, there was a big dinner at the hunting lodge and alot of the guests never turned up because they couldnt get into cottingham. What do you live in corby?

What a sobering story. Can't even begin to think how the Ka and Transit drivers must be feeling this morning.

terrible story - but, as has been said, we are all mortal - one of the reasons I bought the mk2 granada is that its built like a tank - and should protect me and my passengers in a crash
my sympathies go to the Ka driver and her family
probably not a good time to point out that KA in an egyptian word - "The Ka (k3) was the concept of life force, the difference between a living and a dead person, death occurring when the ka left the body"

didnt know that bout the egyptian word, weird huh?
As for mk2 granada i know what you mean, my old mk2 estate was a good car and they are built like barn doors.
Thanks for all the kind words about my family but as has been said i think our thoughts should be with the other families. Keep safe people.

Horrible story - I feel for them - even more so for the transit driver as he's got to live with that now for no reason (of course, assuming he was not speeding). RIP

I can't really add any more to the sentiments already given other than to say deepest condolencies to the families involved. A truly sad waste of innocent young lives.

It is sobering. That must be just terrible for the mother. Last week, a 16 year old lad was out with his mates round here, complained of a headache and had died within the hour. It was a brain hemerage - no symtums or anything. Not nice.

Every now and then something comes along to remind us that these things that are a part of daily life and that we consider as a hobby, are very capable of killing us. My heart goes out to the woman who, without a doubt, will always remember yesterday as the absolute worst day of her life. I'm pleased that your family are OK though Matt and they they apparently dealt with it admirably...keep an eye on them though, eh?

Be careful out there on those familiar junctions, on Friday I had a near miss on a junction I use every day coming back from work and it scared the hell out of me. My car in red, basically there's a queue of traffic going Eastbound, but Westbound is clear so I always go that way, however some absolute idiot decided to overtake the queue of traffic on the wrong side of the road in his battered Micra so he could go down a side street. As there's a building right up to the edge of the path, you have zero visibility until you've pulled out a bit, but this isn't a problem unless people are driving on the wrong side of the road. However, I got off lucky compared to what happened with the Ka and Transit. Whoever's fault it was, it's a shame and reminds you that we're in control of very heavy machines capable of great damage. Even a tiny little Fiat 500 is still a 500kg lump of metal and glass. I see a lot of the aftermath of accidents on my route to and from work (usually in the same places) and it serves as a reminder to be very alert, no matter how familiar you are with the road.

According to the BBC the van driver was arrested, so he may have been doing something he shouldn't have. The two boys were 13 - such a waste of life...
