I am really pleased at how this car has turned out. It is a cracking example of a very sensible, useable day to day classic.
With thanks again to Mic's Mobile Valeting (http://www.micsmobilevaleting.co.uk/), the E28 525e is now ready for sale.
1987 525e showing a recorded 126000 miles. This car was owned by a customer for a good few years. He bought it from its elderly long term owner and continued to look after it to the same standard. A couple of years ago, he took it off the road to tidy it up and weld the floor pans. Unfortunately, part way through, Mother Nature, in the form of the stork, had other ideas and, he soon found that he had more important things to spend his money on.
The 525e was BMW's effort at an economical car, and by and large, it worked. The low compression, low revving, high torque 2.7 litre version of the M20 mated to the ZF4HP22 was generally accepted to be quite economical and in excess of 30 mpg can be achieved without too much difficulty.
This car is in Lachs silver and benefits from the shadowline and de-chrome options making it look very distinctive. The "bottle top" alloys have been refurbed to a dark grey colour and complement the silver well.
The bodywork is very good. There is no rust. The arches, sills, inner sills, jacking points etc. are all solid. The floor pans and one chassis leg have been repaired to a good standard. This car needs no rust remedial work and has also been treated with our standard rust protector, Bilt Hamber Dynax UB. The sunroof has a couple of bubbles that could do with attention, and there's a very slight dent right at the leading edge of the bonnet, and the inner frames of the rear doors will need attention in the future, but do not show externally. Other than these minor issues, it is in very tidy order indeed as the photos show.
Mechanically too, all is well. It drives perfectly and as part of its recent recommission has had new pitman arm bushes, front discs and pads and a couple of bushes, drop links, brake pipes, flexis etc.
A full engine service has the M20b27 in this car running beautifully. It is noticeably very quiet and smooth. The auto box, though like all etas, missing the switchable, sports modes, changes up and down smoothly, almost imperceptibly and provides effortless driving whether around town, in traffic or on the motorway. The M20 and 4HP22 really are very well suited.
The brakes are effective and the suspension is compliant without being soft. Road holding is poised without the added firmness of the M30 engined models. This really is a super compromise. Reasonable performance, excellent road manners and the super light, airy driving experience that only the E12 and E28 can provide in a big saloon car.
The interior is perfect. The seats are unworn and there is barely a mark on any of the interior trim. The dashboard is uncracked - unlike most - and there is an SE steering wheel fitted along with a stitched leather gear shift. A Becker Mexico CC completes the interior supplying modern sound quality while not looking out of place.
There is a spare wheel and a full boot toolkit. There is also a full bootlid toolkit.
Do not be fooled by the value currently offered by the E28 in the classic car market. This is a model which, in our view, is currently seriously undervalued. These cars have the classic car looks, pedigree and driving experience whilst BMW's over engineering approach to manufacture means that they are both cheap and simple to maintain mechanically, but day to day reliable. This car could easily be put to use as a daily driver and if maintained with reasonable care and attention - particularly with an eye out for corrosion and some regular preventative maintenance it that area - will last for many, many years to come.
A bonus is that they are not going to get any cheaper. With interest rates on savings at 0.0 something percent, a good reliable classic car, such as this one, is miles better financially and much more fun than money in the bank.
12 months MoT at the time of purchase. Can be taxed at additional cost if required.
Many photos available on request. Any inspection welcome. Ramp available. Delivery arranged if required. Part exchange of classic (prefer BMW obviously) welcome.
