Some of you may remember I posted a topic up a little while ago offering transport for any parts etc, as I was going for a full on tour of the country! Well, I did it and boy I am nakered now!!
So, after speaking very nicely to my gran, she got me put on her insurance for a few days at the rather expensive (imo) price of £45. 18, male, what do you expect I guess? The car, a 1996 1.2 peugeot 106, hasn't seen the motorway for a rather long time, so I was a bit wary, but never mind!
I started off at home in Essex, and the schedule was as follows...
1) Leeds- drop my bike off
2) Leeds- pick up some wheels for Seth
3) Manchester- 2 cobra classic bucket seat
4) Scunthorpe- pick up an engine for a member of the imp club thats helped me out a lot
5) Boston, Lincs- retro roof rack!
6) Tattershal- Old skool suitcase to sit on aforementioned roof rack!
7) Daventry- High efficiency rad, and oil filter housing
8) Herts- drop off an engine to be built
9) BACK HOME TO ESSEX!!
Originally, I was going to do it ALL on Friday, but in the end I decided to set off on Thursday night. So, bike and to-be-built engine in car, off I went! As I drove past Notts, I made mistake number 1- I called a mate and popped in to visit! Ended up not getting to Leeds till 3 in the morning!
Didn't really spot much unfortunately, but was passed by this which I thought was mildly interesting
Snetterton course car
After a rather pants 4 hours kip, I was up, and off at half 7 to stop number one. South of Leeds to pick up some wheels for Seth.
This was the first scare of the day, because when I turned up, there were 6 of them, and I forget, not all cars run piddly little 12" wheels like mine!
Got them in, and it became obvious, that I might struggle for space for the rest of the day!
Me and lots of rubber!
Next stop, Manchester. Twas a lovely drive down the M62 as it was a lovely day, so that was nice. Bit of a traffic jam though, look like one of the sign bridges had started to fall down as there was smashed concrete all over the road??
2 bucket seats later, and I'm heading back on the same road in the opposite direction
On the way there, I noticed a retro truck on the other side of the road, so I stopped for a quick snap. It was an oldskool petrol station/garage type place. Sadly no other retroness though
When I got back onto the motorway, remember I mentioned about the jam and the concrete.....? Well I got lucky becuase I must have just slipped through before they closed it!
This went on for a loooooooooooong time!
Now I was supposed to be heading to Scunthorpe to pick up an engine for someone, but with the car looking like this already, it became evident I wasn't going to have the room for everything!
So instead I opted for the slightly more sensible option of heading back to Leeds for a power nap!
Couple of spots on the way....
Oh how I giggled at that rear spoiler
Time was already getting on, after a 45 minute power nap I was off again. As I left the car park noticed a rather nice mini, which naturally, got flyered!
As did this EXTREMELY clean morris minor parked on a garage forecourt.
Twas alovely drive over to the east to Boston, scenery was fantastic, but sadly my photo skills are lacking, so no pics I'm afriad! No spots either
After muchos faffing around and me giving the guy an extra fiver for being in the wrong place at the wrong time and generally ballsing up his afternoon because of it, the roof rack was mine!
And I was headed to Daventry! I skipped out Tattershall because I was not in the mood all for the sake of an old suitcase!
Along the A52 I noticed a "Vintage and Classic Car" Dealership,
pulled in to be greated by a stunning E-type. Quick chat with the old boy owner and he agreed to put a couple of flyers in the window
Sadly, I was way behind schedule already and felt like a bit of a plank taking photos, so those were the only two I got. He had some fantastic looking cars in there though, from a glance they all looked concourse!
Over to Daventry to meet the owner of
(stolen your pic Tim, hope you don't mind!)
And grab myself my last few bits- High efficieny rad and oil filter housing
And that my friends, was the last stop. By the time I left Daventry it was too late to head to Herts to drop the engine off, so it er, looks like I'm having to build it myself!!
Got back at about half ten in the end, and pretty much walked in doors and collapsed onto the bed!
This is everything that came out the car this morning: (well almost, a fair few other bits but they're not that interesting!)
And THIS is what got me through the day!
The car was faultless all day! Cruised so comfortably and even coped well when I was on the M25 last night, desperate to get home and hence travelling with an S3 at 90! Here she is:
And yes, I did cheat and take most of the photos today as I was unloading everything!
Grand total: 710 miles!!
