Hi all,
Just been flatting out panels ready for a respray, and phoned the guy who'll be painting it to book it in.
The car's been in my garage for 2 years while I've been welding on replacement arches and sills. I primed everything as I went to protect it. The spray cans are Hycote Acrylic Primer - it says it's compatible with cellulose and acrylic top coats. When I told the painter this, he told me it would react with the 2-pack he'll be using.
Anyone here know if this is right and if so is there anything I can paint it with before taking it to him?
Many thanks, Aaron.

Not too sure but generally you can put 2-pack over most things apart from synthetics (even then, if it's been on for a long time you can sometimes get away with it) The worst/strongest top coat is celly. The celly thinners that haven't evaporated, bites into the original paint and reacts with it causing crinkling/crazing. If it says "it's compatible with cellulose top coats" then you should be fine with a 2-pack top coat. Tell him to try a test panel first.

2 pack goes over must stuff so long as its cured well.
He can shoot it with Barcoat or a similar isolator or sealer product.
I thought the trade was all waterbased now anyway?

I'd heard that certain paints were being banned but when I spoke to him today he definitely said he'd be using 2-pack.
There's a guy in the next units over from where I work who a few workmates have used and it's actually much closer to me so I'm going to have a chat Monday and see if he's interested in doing it. On Friday I had a close look at an Impreza wing he'd just sprayed for £70 and it looked good to me.
Thanks for the replies, Aaron.

barcoat isolator paint should sort it out prior to painting proper. cellulose paint supply changed january this year and we are going to have to use water based paint at some point, the company I use (www.paints4u.com) are still supplying nearly every colour in cellulose at the moment. you will still be able to get cellulose paint but in 'marine grade only' - I would assume that some existing paint companies will make use of this loop hole. as for a professional paint shop using 2k shouldnt cause any problems - sounds like you caught him at a run out of milk moment.

2K is on the list to be banned. You've got until the end of the year as far as I have read. The thing is 2K primer will still be available (as will celly primer) and nobody seems to have answered my question about clears - last time I asked there was no *durable* waterbased clear so most people still seemed to be using 2K. Even the trade seems confused about this.
Cellulose is still legal for "historic restoration projects" although it could be illegal for the trade to spray it!

I'm just back from speaking to the sprayer who has a unit near my work. He confirmed that the primer I've used will react with almost anything. He is collecting paint for another car today and is going to enquire after what's the best primer I can use to prep the car before taking it to him. Seems a nice bloke and was keen enough to do the colour coat and lacquer if i can get it suitably primed. Got a couple of Minis and a TR7 in at the minute for full resprays, along with newer car-park dented stuff. He also mentioned that certain paints were being banned, but that the clear coats were not. Aaron.

I thought 2K was being banned by then end of last year, I am due to be repaint the MGB in the next month, so yesterday I went to get the paint.
2K is still on the shelf at my local paint suppliers it seems, and they were happy to sell it to me.

the law is tricky because technically the ban came in on 31/12/2006 but any "unsold stock" from prior to 31/12/2006 is allowed to be sold up until 31/12/2007 so long as it was made before 31/12/2006.
Its a rigfht fudge of a law because it was supposed to covber all top coats and include clearcoats but nobody can seem to make a waterbase or UHS type clearcoat which is durable enough so I think 2K clear is still allowed for the time being...
What does appear to have gone alreay is HS polybasecaot which is a shame because that stuff was easy to use, covered well and gave a nice colour. The new UHS stuff looks like a PITA to use, but I'll reserve judgement until I've tried it.
