As a lifelong VW nut, its not often I take any interest in Vauxhalls, but the other day I saw one that blew me away. The car in question was on the cover of this months Vauxhall mag. it has an old Astra GTE body panels fitted to the front and a Saab turbo engine. Looked awesome. Does anybody have any info or links to a build thread?

ha ha, yeah good point. Meant to buy it but never went back. To be honest, I find that magazine articles tend to gloss over a lot of important build facts.

MK2 Astras were terrible handlers even new, with the extra power and chassis stiffness I wonder how that thing handles on track? I like the look of it though

Buying the mag sure would have been a good shout when wanting to find about a car that 'blew you away'! I shot it for Total Vauxhall and have to say it was one of my favourite builds I've ever seen in the Vauxhall scene. Still very much a budget build, but there was a lot of work involved in the creation of it.

Did you know that the Australian Daewoo Nexia's were basically Astra's - same panels front and back! Always fancied building one of these, but it's easier to find an Astra than a Daewoo these days.

I would definitely consider doing this to a Daewoo - we never got the Astra in Australia. 0ur front drive Holdens didn't start being Opel/Vauxhall's until the model after this one, with badge engineered Suzuki's and Toyota's filling the void.
I can't say I have seen a Daewoo of that vintage on the road for a really long time. I believe they were called a Cielo here, and the advertisements included a blue heeler cattle dog, because that would make it much more Australian....

There was a "gte" v6 Nexia on ebay a few months back. It inspired me to look for a Nexia, but at the time there were no Nexias advertised. Just think it would be quite kool driving around in a "p/n" reg Astra gte

Vauxhall owners have their own bulletin board dedicated to the subject. www.saabconversions.com/phpbb Personally I prefer the Saab 2.0 16v turbo in a Saab 99 bodyshell.

theres a few B204 engined cars in our club (astra-mk2.com) and a couple of nexias converted to GTE spec, even a nexia with two turbo engines! i'd say they are about 90% there, ignoring the obvious bodywork changes there are significant differences to the bulkhead, heater and dashboard packaging. nothing insurmountable though, tbh the only reason to use one as a donor (other than being a bit more non conformist than an astra GTE already seems to be) is because they are give away price and you start off with a very slightly less rusty shell
