I'm polishing/detailing a set of Gemini 8 spoke alloys to fit on my type 3 (full details here www.vwscotclub.co.uk/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=3423 ) but I have 2 problems. 1, the wheels were cheap (very cheap) but didnt come with centre caps, anybody have any idea where I would get caps or something that would fill the hole? 2, Any idea where I would get locking wheel bolts? Any ideas gratefully recieved, Dave.

caps wise, try ebay, autojumbles for 2nd hand ones.not sure about new ones. for the bolts, places like www.customspeedparts.com/index.html~ and www.machine7.com/ should have them, failing that a local motor factor may have them. my local one had allsorts of type 4 stuff on the shelf, which was a surprise. HTH.

Going back in time to 1987......... I made some centre caps for a set of Appliance wire-mags. Pretty sure I used aerosol can lids that just fitted inside the centre, gave them a coat of silver and they looked fine. I recall I got given two original Appliance caps sometime after, but were very rusty with very little chrome left.
Wheels were on my 1303 beetle, so probably same centre dimensions.

I bought some locking wheel nuts from ebay. Having seen them in Halfrauds for £50 odd per set I was well pleased when I managed to get about 4 sets for £25.
Well pleased that is, until I tried to tighten them up onto my car. All the threads disappeared and I was reminded of the old adage that - you gets what you pays for!
To be fair I contacted the seller and he said that he would refund me but I never got around to returning them. They were supposed to be Wolfrace bolts too!

Is there a shoulder for them to sit on, i can't see too well from the pic, if so I could probably get round to making you a set from acrylic. (If I can find some mirror backed) I've had a set on my brms on the merc for almost two years. I hold them on with outdoor sticky fixers and have never lost one, this is why there needs to be a shoulder, rather than them being an interference fit with the diameter of the center bore. Here's a couple of pics of mine. I'm in school this morning supervising some Y11's catching up with coursework so i'll have a play and post some pics.

Try 1, Mirror backed acrylic, then backed with a black disk. Not very good. The mirrow VW looks ok but the etch is not clear enough to show the black. Try 2 + 3 Etched straight on to the black, the etches are reversed so there is a positive and negative. Look ok but not great. Would also have the texture of the etch on show. Could be covered with a clear disk, but attatching would be a problem. Try 4 Etched the logo onto clear acrylic, then turned over and backed with black. This looks the best so far, but again there is tthe problem joining the two layers because any glue used will show through the clear. I don't think i'm going to be able to come up with anything suitable.

tonycocacola; Machine 7 was my first port of call but without success. They did help me out with mag washers but as the previous owner of the wheels had been using alluminium washers!!!
surprisingskoda; they are 4x130 Beetle pattern.
guz; It was a bit too obvious for mr to measure that before posting, I will check later.
ger; Cheers for the link, I will chase up details later.
markbognor; those are cool but the wheels I have don't have a tall enough shoulder and the bearing caps/rear hubs would stick through. From what I can see the caps on these wheels would be fitted from behind and there is a shamferred edge to hold the cap in place.
sav; Cool Idea, I will go and measure up some lids later.
hongkongphooey; not convinced I'm affraid but I do like the method of fitting.

I masked and painted these wheels today and I think the tin lids look great; Just for comparison sake, here is how they looked before I started working on them; Best bit is the 5 of them only cost me £20 with 2 good tyres (that I wont be using) to buy so total cost is about £100.
