I've been offered a late 4.4 version I've had a read up on bimmer forum but was just wondering if anyone had ever had or driven one Is nice and looks smart but I'm guessing it going to drink petrol being a 4.4 v8 Just trying to persuade other half it could be her daily driver (luckily she doesn't do many miles a week!) Thanks

If she won't have it, I will.
Driven one briefly a number of years ago, a pleasure to drive as with the rest of the BMW range. Just keep an eye on bushes, tyres and balancing.

I drive a 5.4 V12 750iL nearly daily so the wrong person to post on here, if the driving in the 840 is mostly round town MPG will be high teens, on a decent run high twenties, never ran a 4.4 but my 2.8 (728i) was 19 round town and low 30's on a run, my 5.4 V12 is 16 round town and mid 20's so i suspect the 4.4 V8 will be somewhere inbetween. I've always had the view that these cars don't like pottering about too much so although i use my 750 for round the doors driving i still try to give it a good long blast once a week. Fantastic car though, as Stevie said watch for worn suspension, bushes, (ball joints on the rear too), shocks, broken springs etc, it's a two ton car so hard on all these components, it's a Grand Tourer rather than a Sportscar. The V8 engines are strong and reliable if looked after but timing chain tensioners go at around 150,000 miles, also watch for waterpumps (plastic impeller), check for electrical faults, and look for evidence of a gearbox oil change, BMW sold it as "sealed for life" but it wasn't according to ZF the manufacturer so there are cases of gearboxes failing between 150 and 200K. Seen an Oxford green 850ci in my travels the other day, still and awesome sight on the road Love my 7 series, hope to move up to an 8 someday.

Cool Thanks is for the tips Its a under 70k miles car so hopefully some of the problems mentioned won't apply Considering it was so expensive when new they seem a bargain nowadays Hopefully the other half will like it as she is going to be using it!

Fabulous cars, but very complex and very expensive to fix if anything out of the ordinary goes wrong.
I'd only consider one if it was full service history and warranty or at a disposable price.

There was a 1997 one on eBay that ended over the weekend. It was a 840ci Sport individual in Estoril Blue. Looked lovely......and I was the high bidder, but reserve not met. The only things that put me off a touch were the fact that it had a stainless steel exhaust on, and since the auction end, the seller contacted me and it appears to have an ABS/sensor fault and an issue with the door handle. It was offered to me at the high bid, but I don`t really want to take on a potential problem car, as I know ABS issues can be costly on these!
However, like most have said, great cars. Not much should go wrong, but if it does, you`ll need deep pockets.
