Just wondered if anyone knew for certain the rules on driving to a vic check?
Bassically i accidently won a 1991 Nissan 300ZX twin turbo manual for a bargain price on ebay with a years mot but its was a Cat c so needs a vic check.
I was planning on sorting inusrance, signing log book, buying tax and driving it back. But needing a vic they wont issue the log book untill its passed so i cant just tax and drive home.
It wouldnt be such a problem if the car wasnt 286 miles away and I'm flying up to Manchester to collect (I'm from near Portsmouth) so the Gov website says a car can be drivin to a VIC check without tax, but it doesnt state a distance......
It would be good if i could drive it back to a vic check!

Believe its the same as what happens for an mot test As long as its insured and your only driving to vic test centre then you will be fine , u til its vic tested anyway you can't have a logbook so impossible to tax , and until the vic has been done it can't be mot,d either
So in nutshell just insure it and take it there and job done , last vic I went too only took 5 mins as he only checked the vin no and that was that haha

It will be insured yeah, but as you say until its vic tested i cant get tax, but it needs an mot for it to be vic tested (which it has as of last week). So as long as its insured and has mot i believe i should be fine driving it to the vic site!
Ive had a car checked before and it only took 5 mins too haha, just didnt have to drive it quite as far!

As long as you are driving DIRECTLY to the VIC premises, no stopping of at a mates or at the shops (petrol stations are okay to stop at)and no sight seeing detours. Make sure you get a signed dated receipt for the car purchase and have the details of where the car is going. The car has to be in a roadworthy condition, which it should be having just been tested.

www.gov.uk/vehicle-identity-check/taking-your-car-for-a-vic-test5. Taking your car for a VIC test When you take your vehicle for a Vehicle Identity Check (VIC) test the following must apply: the car must be roadworthy and able to be driven under its own power the car must have a valid MOT if it needs one (if you’re driving it to the VIC) the person driving the car must be insured the car must have front and rear number plates (if you’re driving it to the test) You can get more information on the VIC test in the ‘Application for a Vehicle Identity Check’. The test takes about 20 minutes and is a check of the car’s identity, not the quality of its repairs. However, if the VIC inspector notices a serious defect which would make the car dangerous to drive they may issue a ‘prohibition notice’. This means the car can’t be driven until it’s made roadworthy and the prohibition notice is removed. You can drive your car directly to and from a VIC without a tax disc. If your car passes its VIC You’ll get a VIC20 pass certificate and DVLA will be told automatically. The VIC marker will then be taken off your vehicle record and the V5C registration certificate will be marked to show ‘substantially repaired and/or accident damaged; identity checked on dd/mm/ccyy’. If your car fails its VIC You’ll get a VIC failure notice (VIC21) with the reasons for failure. The case will then be investigated by the police or DVLA - this may take several weeks. If the car’s identity is then confirmed you’ll get your VIC20 pass certificate. If the car’s identity can’t be confirmed the VIC marker will remain on the vehicle record.

Can you tax it on the new keeper slip at the post office or has it already got a VIC marker on it?
I bought a car recently, took the new keeper slip into the post office and got 12 months tax. Just over a week later had a letter through about a VIC being required, so phoned VOSA up and the guy on the end of the line said I'm legal to drive it until the tax runs out. It's just they won't issue the V5 or a tax reminder to me until they've seen it.

Vic marker is already in place so won't issue the log book without a vic!

In that case you'd be best to get it transported, not worth the hassle.

Found a quote for £250 including a lift home for 2 people, would have been £95 in fuel anyway so it's a reasonable price!
