I think I've got the right section for my question
I'm buying another a 'retro ride' in the next couple of days, I have already put a deposit down. The remainder is being paid when the owner drops the car off (probably Wednesday).
The car has been of the road for a number of years in dry storage. The owner only has the old style log book for the car the A4 sized type. Not the modern A5 sized V5C.
Basically just wondering will there be a charge to get the new logbook in my name. Or will the DVLA just issue a modern one when the old one is sent in? The current owner has said he thinks they will just issue a new style one when we send in the old one.
I know the DVLA charge £25 for a logbook if you don't have one. But we have one, its just that its the old style.
Anyone able to shed any info on this one?
Cheers

You should receive the new style V5C without any costs, though most cars should have received the new style red V5 by now I would have thought?

Thanks guys! That's an extra £25 to put towards getting the car back on the road The current owner has had the car 7-8 years, and the person before that had it stood in a garage for a long time too. The owner did same something about he had moved house since first buying the car, so maybe the log book went to his old house?? Its down on the DVLA database as last being taxed in 96.

Because it hasn't been on the road since 31 Jan 98, it's never been SORNd - so you won't get a new style V5C automatically.
Send in the old one with change of owner and make sure you receive the new V5C within 4 weeks.
If you're not taxing it straight away make sure that you SORN it straight away.

Shouldn't need to sorn it (or be able to) if it was last taxed before the sorn rules came in.

You don't have to (legally) but reading other forums regarding clamping and towing of un-SORNd vehicles BEFORE confirming their status (including on private ground that is accessible to the public) it makes sense to SORN it straight away IMO - and it's about to change to a rolling SORN, so isn't any hassle.
As for not being able to - why not? I have ten or eleven cars on SORN - several weren't SORNd when I got them, a couple haven't been taxed since pre-SORN.

I always save a scan of any documents before I send them in to DVLA too….just in case….too many horror stories of them losing documents…..including people losing their entitlements to ride Motorbikes when renewing their license and having to retake their test!
