Hello everyone, Great forum! I'm after my first mercedes (once I've sold my mk2 golf!) and would love a four door W115 saloon preferably a petrol pre-73 200. Does anybody know of any going in the S.E region, or would like to p/ex for my golf (see for sale section). Lastly, what is the availability of parts and spares like for W115's, can anybody give me an idea of the cost of serviceable bits or clutches, pads, exhausts, etc. Many thanks in advance.

Hello and welcome! I have a Mercedes 200 W115, and I can tell you that parts are easy to come by. Places like Euro and German and Swedish do lots of parts, and you can still get pretty much every part from MB dealers (at a price, naturally!) Service items are about the same price as VW ones really - Exhausts about £60 per section, brake pads about £20ish (these are non-MB prices BTW!) When looking at a prospective W115 / W114 (114's denote 6 cylinders, 115's four) rust is the main thing really. A favourite place is on the wings just behind the headlights - it's a great crud-catcher and rots nicely! Have a prod around the lenses. Sills are another area to go: front and rear corners. And wheelarches, they get crumbly too! Body panels are easy to come across - you can get wings from MB for about £300+VAT each (!) or pattern ones for £100ish. The Merc ones will be thicker steel but it depends on budget. All panels can be got either from MB or pattern ones (try searching for Hadrian Panels on the net - they do pretty good copies) I'd look for an Auto (most were) as the 4-speed manual is a bit of a dog (I have one ). The 200 petrol is a good engine, pretty bullet-proof. You get a bit more oomph from the 230, but for good performance I'd go for a 280 straight six. Diesels are great and do interstellar miles (we're talking millions...), just don't expect to get anywhere very quickly! Erm, well that's about all I can think of right now. I don't know where you could find one in the S.E. but check the private ads first. I've seen a few on eBay too. Keep us posted on how you get on! If you have any questions just ask.

Thanks a lot BenzBoy, you've given more info than I could find anywhere else!!! There seems to be a distinct lack of info on these cars So it seems bodywork could be my biggest enemy...I also read somewhere that the battery trays are meant to rot too Hadrian Panels do seem to have things covered though How did you find your Merc? I've got my eye on this one but it's a bit out of my price range Nice Imp btw REVOLUTION#9, my mate used to have a pea green one and after that he restored a bright red Sunbeam Stiletto....nippy little cars

Hmm, just looked at the W115 you mentioned... £2500 is a heck of a lot for a 230 in "average condition for year" in my opinion. Values are rising all the time though. I found mine purely by chance. I'd come back from working abroad and needed a daily driver. I was after a Triumph Dolomite or a Reliant Scimitar, and then I saw the Merc in Autotrader. It was three years ago now, but I got it for £600 - one prev owner, FSH, 78k but plenty of rusty panels! Maybe values have risen a little since then but I would think you could pick up a road-going one in original condition for about a grand (needing work). Minters fetch £4-5k depending on what spec it is. These are just what I've experienced through owning mine for 3 years. I'm SORNing mine in November for some work - bodywork after crashing it the other day (looking very wonky at the moment!), and a V8 engine transplant. So I'll be Benz-less for a few months! It does mean I'll have a spare 200 petrol engine going though should you need parts

I may well be up for that engine BenzBoy, may be the gearbox as well depending on what model I end up with Speaking of models I much prefer the steering wheels on the W114, I wonder if they fit straight onto a W115? Thanks for all the links 83Golf..nice eye candy to drool over. Would prefer a RHD one though from this side of the water, and I'm not talking about the Thames ;D

I know Iain of Max Hydraulics fame has his w114 280ce coupe for sale. It needs some work, but he has £2000 worth of new genuine panels to go with it. I don't think it's that bad as it is, but then I am ScrapingScrap!
This car had a fair bit of publicity a couple of years ago as it was the first car in the UK to run a fast air system. It moves as fast as my gold Benz' hydros with the added advantage of not having hydraulic oil to play with!
He is looking for about £2k i think. There must be £1500 worth of air set-up in it, plus all those panels - it's something of a bargain.
Hmm, might even still have wires on it too!

I know of a very low miles (37k from new!!!) beigeish yellow kinda coloured one that may be up for sale soon.
its a 200.4 I think, 1975 car
It's tidy as anything from what I've seen and sits on 16" AMG penta's, but I think he's looking to keep the wheels, so it'll probably be sat on the stockers.
I'll get you his number if you like?, he's in the east midlands though.

Hi there! Love the look of that Golf you got. I had the picture open last night "by chance" when my other half was in the room....I tried to convince her that it would be far more fun than her poo astra (as mocked in the reader's rides section), buut to no avail. DRAT. I'll keep trying to persuade her that it's the car she really wants and needs....

Speaking of models I much prefer the steering wheels on the W114, I wonder if they fit straight onto a W115? I think the wheel you are referring to is the one with the chrome ring on it - am I right? If so, I think these were fitted to all early ("phase 1") W115 and W114 cars. They can be recognise by a slightly narrower grille, and two-piece front side glass. The later "facelift" models had a wider grille and one piece side glass, as well as the "louvred" rear lights. To my knowledge all Mercedes steering wheels are interchangeable. Not sure if it extends to the newer stuff but definitely up tho the mid-80's. They do a really nice white steering wheel which I think looks great - you can get them on German eBay for about £30... I'm after one myself! I don't know when my engine is gonna be available - could be as early as end of November depending on how quick I can work! It's been totally faultless for the three years I've had it, and the mileage now stands at 94k. You could maybe get a high-mileage example cheaper and swap the engines over! The gearbox is good but as I said Mercedes never quite got the hang of manual 'boxes! ScrapinScrap - that Max Hydraulics W114 is SO nice! I saw it on eBay a few months back but it seems it hasn't shifted . That would be an excellent purchase for the juice alone. And it's a 2.8 six... and doesn't it run nitrous or am I getting mixed up? If I had £2k I'd have his hand off!! Spares with it too!

ScrapingScrap : I love the merc your talking about but my old man had a 280 and he was forever chucking fuel in it, and I have my heart set on a 4 door saloon for some reason If he ever wants to sell the fast air system alone I would be very interested as I'm familiar with fitting these kits as I helped with my mates Chevy Astro Van. cappuccinocruiser : If the merc is primrose yellow then I'd have to pass, but if it's beige then I would be very interested depending on the price of course. Could you e-mail me his number/e-mail - gdmail@lineone.netThank You NickB : Cheers! The car has been well looked after, I just need something older The full sales pitch is here. More fun than an Astra anyday! BenzBoy : I prefer the steering wheels with the chrome ring on them, less plasticy is you see what I mean 94k isn't bad at all, I'll keep that in mind when I'm looking at some higher millage merc's. Where about's are you based?

I take 'rmad' is short for 'raving mad' which means you must be simon? I had one of your t-shirts back in the early '90's I'm Greg the fella you usually see with Lee at Rod shows, and as for the big man himself he's good. The van now sits lower at the front, thanks to some dropped spindles we fitted a while ago. Attention has now switched to his '67 'volksrod' bug, which has just had the bulkhead lengthened (not an easy job I can tell you!).

I'm in Nottingham - a bit far from the S.E. but you could stop at the Pod along the way! ;D I'm after one of the early type steering wheels too! I would advise eBay.de as the ones I've seen in the UK at autojumbles seem to be wanting silly money for them. There must loads in Germany so cheaper.

The front beam is on now Simon and it's on the deck ;D This is what it looked like when I had it on the road many years ago! - I saw the merc on vzi but Paul sold it a few weeks ago, would have been perfect although I'm gonna try and get an auto now.
