I am really really really tempted by some of the early 3.6 M5's out there. I know better than to get a really cheap one because that is obviously more trouble than it's worth but I keep reading that even a really good one will cost £5k / year just to keep alive. Is this right and am I insane to even think of looking at one or is it actually something to consider?

For a while there was a purple E34 estate wagon for sale on leboncoin. Way too cool. €13k though.
Go on, buy it, and start a Readers' Rides thread!!

One of the guys who shares space at Area 52 has a few E34 M5's (as well as a few E39 M5's too..) and he loves them to bits and mostly drives one of them as a daily (which one depends on what mood he's in etc...)
BUT....when they go wrong, the bills are huge. He's a bit of a BMW specialist and also breaks a fair few if they are crash damaged or badly broken. He says himself that if he didn't have this resource of parts, he probably wouldn't consider running one for anything other than occasional use unless he was prepared for big bills.
They don't go wrong often and are beautifully built cars (the E34 especially so) and are sublime to drive but if/when they do go wrong, they are in a completely different league of expensive compared to normal BMW prices. Very, very little is common to other E34's.
I'm not saying that £5k a year is the 'right' money to budget for, but I know when he was doing some work on one of his engines, just gaskets, plugs, connectors, some pipes/hoses, clips and belts/tensioners whilst doing a head gasket, he was up to about £2.5k in parts alone. I know he's fastidious with buying all new bits when genworksmonnstuff so you can probably knock about £1k off that for things that weren't absolutely essential, but it's still well out of pocket money running costs.
Cracking cars in every respect but, yes, very expensive to run if you need to work on them.
Sorry if this goes against what everyone else is saying but I'm just going on what someone who runs them regularly has told me and what I've seen first hand.

Seriously why don't you do a bot of homework on what goes wrong and prices- you may find a good one with the expensive bits done - or ignore that and buy one anyway.

![](http://www.evo.co.uk/images/front_picture_library_UK/dir_426/car_photo_213403_25.jpg) Prices wont go lower. If you break it, I recon selling it in parts would regain a bit of money back. Find a Touring (only 200 made in LHD), sell after a while on the continent and you have driven a e34 M5 for the lowest cost possible.

I know the M badge is a big lure, but manual 540 E34 seems to me to offer 90% of the performance for 30% of the cost*
I had a 535i manual for a short time, great car was great fun and predictable. Just needed stiffer suspension to be truly awesome.

Thanks guys. @mystery Machine - that seems to sum up what I've been reading online, I think I'll just have to be careful and get cheap parts when they come available rather than when I need them. grumpy - sorry, I get what you mean. In my defence I've been doing a huge amount of research but just interested to see what other people thought. I'm wary of forums and reviews where people haven't owned the car or are just plain stupid so get ripped off / break things unnecessarily. Robinxr4i - it's the engine that does it for me. If I don't get an M5 it'll be an early M20 525i. James

Pistonheads did a feature on these a few weeks ago. Read here: www.pistonheads.com/news/default.asp?storyId=29655. A lot of car for not a lot of money. They are very capable cars and as the posts above say, prices are at rock bottom. The estate would be perfect if the steering wheel was on the right side, but you cant have everything. If it breaks, budget repair or break and get you money back. Please post how you get on, on here. I am too chicken to buy one. This picture will put you off: ![](http://dankertheme.com/dinding/wp-content/uploads/bmw-wallpapers-442-bmw-m5-e34-photo-pichigh-quality-new-images.jpg) It gave me a feeling that I havent had since before i was married....! Oh and this is good too: I don't condone driving like that on the streets, but its ace.

After having owned thre E34's (including one I stripped out to make a race car) I would love an M5 version. I just don't have the funds.

Oh and this is good too: I don't condone driving like that on the streets, but its ace. It's a shame that he died in that car. With all his skill and judgement behind the wheel (not to mention an element of luck that he didn't kill anyone), it's sad that a lack of judgement on who to let drive the damned thing ultimately ended his life.
